Christine Quinn’s wife says NYC mayoral candidate has received death threats
'Chris has gotten threats about being gay'
Irish American Mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn has received anti-gay death threats, her wife Kim Catullo has revealed.
Quinn’s wife Kim Catullo said she worries a lot about the welfare of her spouse, who is hoping to become New York’s first female openly gay mayor.
“Chris has gotten threats about being gay. It’s hard to accept and we live in a place that is the most tolerant,” Catullo told the Daily News, during an interview in which she discussed Quinn’s mayoral bid.
The pair who met on a blind date in September, 2001 married last year when New York State legalized same-sex marriage.
“I worry about everything, if she is getting enough rest, is she safe,” said Catullo.
A spokesman from Quinn’s campaign confirmed the threats, but did not elaborate.
Catullo, a corporate attorney, described recent gay hate crimes in the city as sobering.
“When you have strides like marriage equality, you tend to think (prejudice) has passed, then things like that happen, and it wakes you up again,” she said.
Usually media shy Catullo told the Daily News why she thinks Quinn is the best candidate to replace Mayor Bloomberg.
“I know her heart. I know her soul. I know who she is,” said Catullo. “And as I tell her all the time, if New Yorkers knew who she was really, as I do, there’d be no question that she would win in a landslide.”
“She is the only one in my opinion who has the experience to run the city. I am so blown away by how smart she is. She is genuine and she cares, almost to a fault.”
