MSNBC host Chris Matthews launched an attack on the Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on the Morning Joe program yesterday.
According to the Huffington Post Matthews charged the the GOP with playing the race card last week against President Obama when Mitt Romney made a widely criticized crack about his own birth certificate. Then the Romney campaign ran an ad which falsely claimed that Obama ended work requirements for welfare.
Said Matthews, 'It is an embarrassment to your party to play that card. This stuff about getting rid of the work requirement for welfare is dishonest — everyone's pointed out it's dishonest. And you are playing that little ethnic card there. You can play your games and giggle about it, but the fact is that your side is playing that card.'
Priebus, who looked shocked to be confronted in such a passionate manner, attempted to downplay Matthews' attacks by suggesting that Obama is looking to Europe now for guidance on healthcare, a claim that further enraged Matthews:
'What? Where do you get this from? This is insane! You mean the Keynesian fiscal policy, you mean the fact that every president we’ve had has tried to offset the economic cycle with stimulus going the other direction is somehow European?
"What’s this got to do with Europe and this foreignization of the guy? You’re doing it now! Saying he’s influenced by foreign influences? You’re playing that card again. What’s this European thing of yours? What are you up to with this constant that he’s not really domestic?'
Later,Matthews told Politico that he deeply resents politicians who attempt to divide the country along racial lines.
'It is obvious that this is something I care passionately about: race was abused by white politicians in my lifetime, including Reagan. For someone to come on the program and deny that this is part of their process, I couldn't take that,' Matthews explained.
'This is something I really, deeply believe in. We grew up in a country where appeals to race have been awful, terrible. This language -- we are beyond this. It had to be called out.'

Pecos if you wish to be "fair and balanced Matthews is no better than the other drongos like Hannity,Malkin.Ingraham,O'Reilly,Bollings and that failed liberal Morris as you stated "they all play the same game"

@kaydog1 - Maybe you do not get it still! Intelligent, informed Americans are ANGRY that the GOP ran a moran like W! Intelligent, informed Americans are ANGRY that W's policies cost us the lives of so many of our best and brightest citizens. Intelligent, informed Americans are ANGRY that W's policies destroyed our economy. Intelligent, informed Americans are ANGRY that W's policies left massive corporations like BP unregulated. Now the GOP wants to fool us again with their lies and dog-whistle remarks and intelligent, informed Americans like Chris Matthews are having none of it. Get used to the sound of it - it is the sound of the truth being told!

To susan724. What ever you felt about G.W. as President, you have to admit he's been a class act as an ex-president. Not once has he complained about all the crap Obama says about him, how Obama blames everything on him. Which if Obama was a REAL leader, he wouldn't do. REAL leaders don't BLAME they LEAD! None of this can you say about the last two Democrat Presidents. They can't keep their damn mouths shut. When Clinton isn't cheaten on his wife, he's stealin the limelight from Obama.
Pecos Kid | Aug 29, 2012, 09:21 PM EDT
WOW! What a bunch of idiots. This game is played the same way by Democrats & Republicans. Matthews selective outrage (crying) is typical of him. Do we expect anything different? He was on the staff of the late Demacrat Senator Moynihan. His bias is always obvious, which is fine, but he just cannot keep from making a fool of himself with his childish outbursts, he's just another buffoon like Kieth Oberman is.
hollabackgurl | Aug 29, 2012, 09:20 PM EDT
Game shows and beauty pageants have ratings, the news should have informed viewers (which is why Matthews comes as such a shock to Fox News fans).

What hate and disinformation emanating from skibberean. Your a class act skibberean.
McNamara31 | Aug 29, 2012, 05:55 PM EDT
Skibberrean says: "The Marxist in the White House is just pure unadulterated EVIL!" People who choose to be blind will never see the world in real terms. And as for your comment about George W loving this country; is that why he sent it into a financial nosedive equal to the great depression of 1929, which in fact took 10 years to get over or was it the two wars he put on credit for future generations to pay, and for Laura as soon as she left the White house she told the world that both herself and Barbara Bush were pro choice and hypocritically stayed silent to get their husbands elected.Sounds like a bunch of liars and manipulators to me.

Skibberrean | Aug 29, 2012, 11:57 AM EDT
Thats OK Susan, Keep on drinking the kool aide! Oh and George Bush did not run the country into the ground and I refuse to get into a political joust with you. Granted he was not perfect as NONE of them were. However, George & Laura Bush love and are very proud of this country. The Marxist in the White House is just pure unadulterated EVIL! Had you done your homework when he was dug out from under a rock in Chicago and fraudulently thrust into the White House, you would see him for what he really is!!
cillowen | Aug 29, 2012, 11:32 AM EDT
not a surprize to have largely blackless Repugs dredging the swamp.
kaydog1 | Aug 29, 2012, 09:50 AM EDT
THIS JUST IN: 'susan724' - I've just reviewed the likely tickets, and it appears the contest will be ROMNEY/RYAN vs OBAMA/BIDEN !!!! Apparantly, Bush will NOT appear on either ticket, so Obama will actually have to run against his OWN record. Shame, really, to face such odds in a contest...In the same vein, attempts to get endorsements from Bill Clinton, to try to suggest the 'prosperity' of the Clinton years are somehow hidden in some future Obama years is, again, an attempt by the Democrats at misdirection. You're welcome.
eiriamach | Aug 29, 2012, 09:24 AM EDT
I'm not a member of the Chris Matthews' fan club, but I admire his courage in confronting the Chair of the GOP with that party's race-based appeals to voters. Priebus gave only feeble excuses for his party's soliciting racist opposition to Obama. Matthews said, "You can play that game and giggle about it," while Priebus merely grinned and joked his way through his feeble explanation about Romney's "joke" misfiring. He concluded with the GOP lie about Obama being a "foreigner" who looks to Europe for his policies. His appeal to a "white-Americans-in-charge" or "American" vs "foreign" mindset was painfully obvious. Joking is a completely inadequate reply to a charge of racist political strategies. Priebus gave away the truth when he refused to take seriously the examples Matthews raised. How many years did the males-in-charge accuse women of being "humorless" when we protested sexism and discrimination? Now Republicans think that Americans who do not laugh at racist jokes lack a sense of humor? Same old, same old ploy, déjà vu, and it's painfully humiliating to have Priebus pitching it at us again. We all ought to be as outraged as Chris Mathews.
susan724 | Aug 29, 2012, 12:16 AM EDT
Does anyone notice that none of the Republicans in this chat ever mention Georgie "W" Bush? We all know you voted for him If I had, I would be just as embarrassed as you are - Even his own party is so embarrassed he was not invited to the Republican Convention - first time this has happened in the history of the U.S. - Romney and Ryan don't want to drag his sorry butt out because he is a stark reminder to the American people of the mess he created in this country. We are now living the results of 8 long years of President Moron and how he practically destroyed our country,- sociopath!
KatieMurphy | Aug 28, 2012, 11:39 PM EDT
the repub party has been taken over by the southern baptists / evangelicals whose predecessors gave the USA slavery the KKK and segregation. And obama is their worst nightmare come true - a black president, fighting against a bunch of rednecks. the civil war may have ended by putting out the fires, but the hate / racism remained, just waiting for the next republican match
feeneycj | Aug 28, 2012, 10:18 PM EDT
Obama himself was joking and winking about being born in Hawaii. The video is on youtube.

Chis Matthews is is another NBC nitwit !! No wonder MSNBC has low ratings as does it's parent, NBC.
MegK311 | Aug 28, 2012, 06:55 PM EDT
I only saw a little bit of Chris Matthews screaming at Reince Priebus and he looked like a 2 yr old having a temper tantrum. I am tired of the Democrats dragging out the race card when things are not going their way. There is no one trying to divide this country more than Obama. Today I went to see the movie 2016 and I think it would be a good movie for everyone to see regardless of political party.
kaydog1 | Aug 28, 2012, 06:52 PM EDT
HA HA HA, that was HILARIOUS!, and I never would have seen it without Irish Central, because I never watch Chris Matthews! I see this as all blatant hypocrisy - especially for the likes of Matthews claiming to "deeply resent politicians who attempt to divide the country along racial lines." He only means he resents non-Leftists, or are we to believe he resents Mr Obama, Obama of 'the Police acted stupidly'/'if I had a son he would look like Travon'/no prosecution for Black Panther intimidation at the polling booth/'they want to put y'all back in chains!'/'I ceased to advertise my Mother's race at the age of 12 or 13'/'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my Mother's race'/'I never emulate White men'/'typical White Woman'/'If it comes to a war I will stand with the muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction'/'my Grandmother was a typical White woman, and feared Black Men'/sat in Rev Wright's Black Liberation Theology Church for 20 years (but never realized there was a message of hatred toward white people...). Funny stuff, right? Riigghhtt?????
Maggie47 | Aug 28, 2012, 06:39 PM EDT
Chris Matthews is rude. He had no respect fo his guest. Mr. Priebus watched him make a fool of himself. I would like to know how he treaks his own son who is a repulican. Today he is running his mouth claiming that President Reagan called the young unemployed men "Bucks" referring to southern black men. I have lived in the south closed to 45 years, I have never heard that word being used in ref. to anyone.
BrianO | Aug 28, 2012, 06:36 PM EDT
Nice discussion , just yell louder over any dissent. So anybody know how Obama's brother is doing these days living in his hut? We all are our brothers keeper after all, except Obama, Who does George Obama ask for help these days? You would be surprised to know.
washwoman | Aug 28, 2012, 05:15 PM EDT
feeneycj, Mitt Romney, as the son of an immigrant, should have risen above the cheap shot. Romney's birth certificate comment makes him appear to be snuggling up to the racist rhetoric of the GOP. If Romney sincerely did not want Barack Obama's background (religious and ethnic) as part of the dialogue, he NEVER should have made the crack.
PiperMac52 | Aug 28, 2012, 05:00 PM EDT
Matthews is a blow hard and blind supporter of Obama. The only race card being played is by the democrats who have made all sorts of inane and divisive comments regarding Race, gender, sexual orientation etc. Give me a break.
susan724 | Aug 28, 2012, 04:51 PM EDT
Skibberrrean - I am sure Priebus's mother is very proud of the boy she raised (the one who looks ike a deer caught in the headlights on the video lol), he has modeled himself after such great Republicans such as George W. Bush who ran this country into the ground and who WAS NOT EVEN INVITED TO THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION BECAUSE ANYONE ASSOCIATED WITH HIM IS POLITICALLY POISONED!!! Too, too FUNNY!!
feeneycj | Aug 28, 2012, 04:49 PM EDT
everyone has a foreign sounding name except the local Native Americans. Is it OK for Native Americans to speak of their birth certificates? Or is the whole issue of being born anywhere taboo?
McNamara31 | Aug 28, 2012, 04:47 PM EDT
@Skibberrean "LOUD,ILL-INFORMED,RUDE" You must be jokin me... These adjectives perfectly describe the majority of the present day GOP and their cronies in media and on AM talk radio and of course their poster boy, Christie.
susan724 | Aug 28, 2012, 04:46 PM EDT
FastEddie - uh, you mean the Republican Party is on the wane, not "wain" (you must to be a Republican - and can you spell potato?).
susan724 | Aug 28, 2012, 04:39 PM EDT
BRILLIANT! - He left Priebus speechless - it's obvious who has the cojones in the room (LOL)!! I LOVE it!!
aloistmartin | Aug 28, 2012, 03:56 PM EDT
Reince Priebus probably needs to take a few pages from Barack Obama`s playbook on use of Analogy, Metaphor, and Orwellian Double-Think.
Skibberrean | Aug 28, 2012, 03:51 PM EDT
CHRIS MATTHEWS IS LOOKING MIGHTY EXHAUSTED FROM "HUMPING" OBAMA'S LEG SO MUCH. PERSONALLY I THINK HE NEEDS A GOOD BEATING! HE IS LOUD, ILL INFORMED, RUDE AND I REALLY HOPE HIS MOTHER IS PROUD OF WHAT SHE RAISED!!

feeneycj, umm...the encounter with Matthews and Priebus was about race. Reading the article above will help you understand. Playing the video will help, too.
Scrivner | Aug 28, 2012, 03:45 PM EDT
Chris Matthews, the poster boy for anal-cranial inversion. His bullying tactics are tiresome, with this out burst he comes across as a mean drunk, reading paranoid fantasies into innocuous sound bites. Prebe's was too much of a gentleman tell him off, should've send in Newt as pinch hitter.
feeneycj | Aug 28, 2012, 03:44 PM EDT
you're saying Romney is white and...you brought up the race issue...look Barack was born in Hawaii, lighten up.
Murph46 | Aug 28, 2012, 03:42 PM EDT
Matthews is a loud mouth punk!
washwoman | Aug 28, 2012, 03:41 PM EDT
feeneycj, Romney veiled his recent birth certificate comment as a shakey attempt at humor. Humor gone bad? BULL. Romney was pandering to the lowest element of his frenzied crowd. The only reasons Mitt's birth certificate is not in question is because he is white, rich, and he doesn't have a "foreign sounding" name. Do you really think if Mitt's name were Juan Garcia he would be given a pass? People would be be screaming about his Mexican-born father. This type of talk from people is bigotry at best and racism at worst.
Nicomax | Aug 28, 2012, 03:28 PM EDT
The race card has worked before [i.e. Nixon's Southern Strategy, Bush I Willie Horton ad, etc.] so why not try it again. The thing that continues to surprise me is that whites in poverty-stricken areas such as West Virginia, southern Ohio, are willing to cast their votes for swells who promise to lower taxes on the swells while cutting vital programs to the poor and near-poor. I guess it is one of hoping they will also own 5 homes someday, and pay 13% in federal taxes, and not sink to the depths of the undeserving minorities who chose to do nothing while collecting entitlements.
hollabackgurl | Aug 28, 2012, 03:18 PM EDT
He was right to call the GOP leaders out on their racism.
borefield | Aug 28, 2012, 03:08 PM EDT
Me thinks the shivers up and down Chris Matthew's leg are waneing a wee bit , think!
feeneycj | Aug 28, 2012, 02:54 PM EDT
Chris has worked himself into a neurotic, partisan-hack frenzy, no more Daily Show for him. Romney is not a birther, he believes Barack was born in Hawaii. I fail to see how any reference to a certificate can be racist. Could someone explain? Is it not PC to discuss your own birth, even when he was in the state where he was born?
EphraimKibbey | Aug 28, 2012, 02:31 PM EDT
It is interesting that the GOP is counting on a misconception held by some white voters that African-Americans are the ones using and abusing welfare when most of the people on welfare are caucasian and so are most of the welfare cheats. Not only do they think their audience for these ads are stupid enough not to check the validity of their claim but that they are too stupid to realize what they are trying to do. It just goes to show what the 1% REALLY think about their base. Since this tack is something that will alienate independents, it can only be considered a desperate attempt to double down on their base and it may have the opposite effect if the base feels insulted. The Tea Party and the Ron Paul delegates already feel abandoned and insulted by the 1% GOP'ers at the convention. Can anyone say "THIRD PARTY?"
FastEddy | Aug 28, 2012, 02:27 PM EDT
Slobbering. spitting and shouting at any [R]epublicrat at every turn. That MSNBC clown act is on the wain ... bye, bye.
hollabackgurl | Aug 28, 2012, 02:04 PM EDT
Field marshal Reince Priebus (where does the GOP unearth these men) looks like he's be run over by a truck. Matthew's won't stand for their racist birther and welfare ploys.
francisquinn | Aug 28, 2012, 02:03 PM EDT
I could not top Judy Stinger....she was right on.....I sopped watching him a long time ago....he is a staunch Democrate....He talkes and talks and talks.....and says the same thing all the time....the only one worse is his fvorite guest Eugene RobinsObama
washwoman | Aug 28, 2012, 01:59 PM EDT
Matthews is right. The dog-whistle wisecracks of the Republican party must be called out. Reagan complaining about "welfare queens driving Cadillac's" is a perfect example of this garbage. Furthermore, Romney's father was born in Mexico and moved to the United States as a 5 year old. In the interest of national security, maybe we ought to be asking if Mitt Romney is really an American. Doesn't Romney's father coming from Mexico make Mitt "anchor baby"? The funny religion he belongs to isn't even Christian! Hmmm... sounds awfully suspicious.
JudyStinger | Aug 28, 2012, 01:55 PM EDT
Looks like Chris Matthews had a melt down. He's made it known that he supports President Obama and said he give him a thrill up his leg - guess he needs another one.
Peggy P | Aug 28, 2012, 01:35 PM EDT
The only people playing the race card are democrats like Chris Matthews. They are desperate because they have nothing else to fall back because their idology and economics are total failures. No wonder his ratings are in the toilet. I am a newsaholic and watch all network and cable news and his is the same old, same old and very boring. Evidently OBama still sends a chill up the back of his leg.
pilib04 | Aug 28, 2012, 01:13 PM EDT
Matthews has a conscience.
McNamara31 | Aug 28, 2012, 12:23 PM EDT
From day one, the GOP has attempted to paint the president "as not one of us" with their birther, Muslim and socialist rhetoric. The GOP does two things extremely well: Negative campaigns and raising trillions in deficits which they always blame on the other party. In Tampa the GOP will pull in mean spirited Gov. Christie from NJ, to do its latest hit job on Obama, and finish with a closing prayer from the Cardinal-in-Chief, and all will wonder is the prayer for the poor or the sick, or possibly for the NY hedge-fund managers to keep their 15% tax rate.
