Police in Chicago have used records from stolen cell phones and credit cards to track down the attackers of Irish student, Natasha McShane, and Stacy Jurich.

Two people are now being held in custody. A source has also revealed that the baseball bat used in the attack been retrieved.

McShane is still in a serious condition at the Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Centre while Jurich is said to be making a slow recovery.

The two young women were attacked while walking from a bar to Jurich’s Bucktown home.

They were then set upon and beaten with a baseball bat till they were unconscious. According to Jurich’s mother McShane was struck in the head and fell to the ground unconscious, in a pool of blood. Jurich who had also received a blow to the head tried to help McShane.

She tried to escape and screamed for a taxi. The first taxi driver sped by, seeing their blood drenched clothes. A second taxi then stopped and called 911 just before Jurich passed out.

McShane and Jurich had been celebrating just before they were attacked. McShane had just received news that she could extend her stay in the U.S through an internship program while Jurich had just received a glowing job review from a Morgan Stanley Smith Barney brokerage office.

McShane, a University College of Dublin student, has been studying at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs. She had planned to prolong her stay by taking an internship position.

Bobby McGuire, owner of Butch McGuire’s, a bar where Natasha worked part-time has organized accommodation for the McShane family and donated money towards their costs. McGuire described Natasha as a “"very nice, outgoing, intelligent young lady".

It's great to see the city of Chicago rally for the two women attached in Bucktown. I wonder how many more atrocities will occur before preventative measures are taken to stop the violence. Where is that citizens group that wears the berets? The fact that the first cab driver drove off, is an atrocity in itself. My prayers to N. McShane for a full recovery.
Yes, unfortunately the police are blamed, and the legal system that keeps putting the violent criminals back out on the streets, is to blame. It's terrible, the amount of time given for selling pot, I agree SouthSideIrish.
Two days ago this board was filled with comments slamming the Chicago Police Department for their handling of this case - "they should have more officers in this area"; "The corrupt CPD will never catch the scumbags"; etc. Where are those bloggers now? The family of the stable victim was on TV last night with overflowing praise for the cops. They tracked credit card action; cell phone calls; recovered the bat and some of the girls possessions. Excellent police work. The feck who did this has been arrested 30 times by the CPD - put the blame on our criminal justice system for not putting criminals behind bars and enabling their violent activities. Of course if he was caught selling pot he would be put away for years and years...
I live in a suburb of Chicago and I am ashamed to admit I am Irish and living in a state and country where this goes on. I pray that both girls get better and can face their attachers in a court of law. When the attachers are found guilty I only hope they get some prison justiced (Chicago Style) besides going to prison.
I am keeping these young women and their families in my prayers as well as the child who took her own life due to bullying. Wish that I could, it is beyond me to apologize for actions of others. I am very, very sorry this happened. I feel a deep pang of shame. God help us all.
Horrible story. Why Irish people would come to the US anymore is beyond me. We're all savages here. May God bless and preserve Natasha and bring her to complete recovery.
God bless this young woman, I'll be praying for her.
Violence in the US is only going to get worse I think. Police depts are now laying off officers. Man oh man, talk about bloodshed in the streets!
Violence is the US is sickening
