The Catholic Church has agreed to pay an out of court settlement rumored to be worth more than $300,000, to a woman that was abused by the infamous pedophile Father Brendan Smyth.
Marie McCormack, now a resident of Canada, sued the Catholic primate of Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady, the diocese of Kilmore and the Norbertine Order to which Smyth belonged.
The settlement was made without an admission of liability and included apologies by the defendants.
McCormack's High Court action led to release of information that Brady was involved in covering up allegations of sexual abuse against Smyth in the 1970s.
Brady was charged with investigating the allegations of clerical abuse. Brady interviewed two young sex abuse victims and swore them to secrecy at the end of his investigation in the Kilmore diocese.
McCormack currently resides in Canada and according to an RTE report, her marriage and quality of life has being greatly affected by the sexual abuse she received between the ages of 14 and 20.
In a sworn affidavit McCormack accused Brady of failing to notify the police of the sex crimes. McCormack also accused Brady of covering up the crimes by failing to take steps to prevent Smyth from abusing herself and other children despite the fact that he was aware that he was a sex predator.
Brady claims that he did his duty and informed his superiors of his investigation and the allegations of sexual abuse by Smyth.
Brady claimed he was not empowered to inform the police and said that the Norbetine Order was responsible for Smyth after he was stripped of his powers in the Kilmore and other diocese.

MollyGannon wrote: It's time to abolish CANON law and deal with these religious sexual offenders by statute law." Guess what, Molly! This is breaking news! Today, in the United States the Supreme Court ruled that 2 Minnesota victims of Fr. Brendan Smythe could sue the Vatican. Do you know what that means? There will be numerous lawsuits coming out of the States, and they will be suing everyone in the Curia, including the Pope, who can be credibly accused of covering up cases of Priest/Nun/Brother/Bishop/Cardinal Pedophilia! A couple of days ago, Belgian autorithies raided the Archdiocese of Belgium. For Survivors, this is as precedent setting as the storming of the Bastille! Yes, Molly, your words are going to come to pass, and for many of us, it won't be too soon!

Has anyone else ever wondered if Cardinal Brady was ever told of subsequent acts of pedophilia by Fr. Brendan Smythe, after the initial case, where two Survivors, abused by Brendan Smythe, were sworn to secrecy? If so, that would make the good cardinal even more culpable, if cases were again brought to his attention and he said nothing! Does anyone know if Cardinal Brady's and Brendan Smythe's names had come up together in other contexts of incidences of Pedophilia? Does anyone in Ireland know about the outcome of other cases of Pedophilia in which Cardinal Brady was part of a review committee or on diocesan board, which referred pedophile priests from one parish to another, or was the Fr. Brendan Smythe case the only one of its kind? Is Cardinal Brady a man, who only had one charge of cover-ups during his career, or like Cardinal Law of Boston, were there too many to even begin to count?

The Roman Catholic Church has never done "it's duty" to the people they are to shepard. They do what they want, when they want it and the parishioners be hanged. The people have been generationally brainwashed for millenium[s].Since the church's inception[middle of the first century] St paul predicted this when he told the new believers to not listen to those who were infiltraiting their little groups. As they were tesching a gospel other than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This church?? should be taken to the World Court and found guilty of every evil in the book.
