I hope the new bishop of Camden will visit the Camden house where Walt Whitman wrote poetry that filled his generation with a new spirit that inspired unity and creativity after the anguish of civil war. And perhaps the bishop will imbibe some of the spirit of freedom celebrated by Whitman: "And you, O my Soul, where you stand,/ Surrounded, surrounded, in measureless oceans of space,/ Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing,— seeking the spheres, to connect them;/ Till the bridge you will need, be form’d — till the ductile anchor hold;/ Till the gossamer thread you fling, catch somewhere, O my Soul."
This Cardinal could learn much from the legacy of John Cardinal O’Connor especially how he stood with unions and in support of the working man.
