'Cannibal cop' Gilberto Valle could face life in prison after jury finds him guilty
Former cop was accused of plotting to kidnap, cook and eat more than 100 women
“Cannibal Cop” Gilberto Valle was convicted Tuesday of conspiracy to kidnap abduct, cook and eat women, including his ex-wife Kathleen Mangan.
The 28-year-old was also convicted of illegally gaining access to the law enforcement database
The jury deliberated for more than 16 hours over four days to find the former NYPD officer guilty.
His estranged Irish American wife Kathleen Mangan told the opening day of his trial how she found frightening emails on her computer outlining his plans to tie her up.
Sobbing uncontrollably, she told jurors how she first discovered the man’s sick fetish when she found pictures of naked and bloody women on her computer, some of whom were dead.
Valle could face life behind bars for his offences. He is due to be sentenced on June 19.
Leaving the courtroom Gilberto Valle's mother, Elizabeth Valle, expressed her disbelief in the verdict, reports the Daily News.
“I’m in shock,” she said. “I don’t know what trial they attended. We all heard the facts.”
Defence attorney Julia L. Gatto, called the verdict “devastating.”
“This was a thought prosecution,” Gatto said. “These are thoughts, very ugly thoughts, but we don’t prosecute people for their thoughts. And we’ll continue to appeal and continue to fight for Mr. Valle.”
