Almost half of all deaths in Ireland last year were cancer related, a new report suggests.

A breakdown of almost 2,000 payouts on life assurance cover during 2011 showed that 44 percent were cancer related. Two-thirds of claims for serious illness were also cancer related, according to Irish Life.

Breast cancer was the most common followed by prostrate and colon cancer.

The data follows a warning from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) that new cases of cancer in Ireland could increase 72 percent by 2030. The WCRF announced on Saturday that Ireland was the worst country in the European Union for cancer related illnesses.

Heart disease was the next biggest illness for Irish Life death claims, with almost a fifth (18 percent) of deaths linked to the illness.

Martin Duffy , the head of claims with Irish Life said the data underlined the continued threat of cancer in Ireland.

"While we've made enormous progress, the reality is that cancer continues to be a dominant cause of illness and death in Ireland," he said.

Silling... I'm with you. At least in the EU, people have “labeling” that identify when Roundup Ready is engineered into (GMO'S) soy, corn and other crops. In the states, even the soy baby formula is made from Roundup Ready soy with no labeling to help the consumer make an informed choice. The only safe choice is organic.
motherIrish From experience and reading I would guess that the factors you outline about cancer are no more different in Ireland than most western countries. Yes GPs are sometimes slow to test for cancer rather than other possibilities and yes patients are sometimes reluctant to want to go to GPs when cancer is suspected. I would guess this is a statistical result and may be a bubble from the massive immigration that Ireland has experienced and also the better cancer detection in recent years, especially for breast cancer. It could even be the better treatment of other major health conditions such as heart disease which would push the cancer percentage up.
I think that the Irish people have the opportunity to be the healthiest om the world, if they just do some lifestyle changes. Stop smoking and drinking, grow your own food organically, exercise in your beautiful, healthy climate and you will see an amazing change. My great grandparents were not feeding their 19 children processed foods.........
Cancer is never prostrate. US Obama care supporters take note. There system in Ireland is not pro active. It is responsive and too late.
Herbicides, Pesticides, Fungicides, are the reason Ireland has such a high rate of cancer. It is as simple as that. Eat organic, become vegetarian, stop smoking, exercise more. That is all one needs to do MotherIrish. We were not designed to eat Roundup or Fly Spray. Pre the 2nd world war these chemicals did not exist. The war ended prematurely and the stockpiles of Nitrogen were converted for farm use. Then came the imbalance of nature, and weeds in abundance. So, it was necessary to control them and so came DDT and Roundup. Read " The Silent Spring " by Rachael Carson.
I would question the reasons why cancer is the biggest killer. Is it because it is not caught quick enough? Is it because treatment plans are delayed due to the medical system? Is it because the treatments are not agressive enough? Is there a lack of doctors able to diagnose cancer and/or treat cancer? This really begs the question WHY??
