Bully attack leaves sixth-grader in coma after being beaten
Bailey O’Neil attacker only received a two day suspension
A sixth-grade honor student from Pennsylvania is in a medically induced coma after being struck several times in the face by another student four weeks ago.
Bailey O'Neil, of Darby Township, Pa, had his nose fractured and suffered a concussion from the attack. His parents brought him to the A.I. DuPont hospital in Wilmington, DEl., where he was treated and released. However, his father says he knew something was wrong with his son when they returned home.
"He was sleeping. He was moody. He wasn't himself. He was angry a little bit. He wasn't really eating," said Bailey's father Rob according to ABC News.
Bailey started having violent seizures a few days later and had to go back to the hospital where his doctors were forced to put him in a medically induced coma.
"Every day I'm trying to stay strong for him," said Bailey's father. "When you get into that hospital room and you're looking at him, I would trade places in a heartbeat. It's my buddy, you know."
He said the boy who hit his son was suspended for two days following the incident, but charges have not been filed against him.
Southeast Delco School District Superintendent Stephen Butz told ABCNews.com the school has turned the investigation over to local police and is cooperating fully with their efforts.
"We take bullying seriously," he said. "We are very concerned about the medical condition of the student and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and students."
