Former Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has claimed his Fianna Fail boss Brian Cowen lacked leadership during his time as Irish Prime Minister.

Lenihan has told a local newspaper in Dublin that he had to step-in and provide real leadership at crucial times during the reign of the last government.

Cowen has since retired from politics and has yet to comment on Lenihan’s claims about his failure to communicate.

“I had a good working relationship with Brian Cowen around the cabinet table but I was disappointed,” said Lenihan in an interview with the Community Voice newspaper.

“I felt that when he was elected Taoiseach he would give a stronger lead and express himself in a more forthright way about the problems facing the country.

“I felt that I had to give a lot of that lead and give those forthright expressions myself along with everything else.”

Lenihan also spoke of his decision not to challenge Cowen for the Fianna Fail leadership.

“I did not challenge Mr Cowen for the leadership because the country was in very choppy waters and any political move of mine could have destabilized the country and its finances,” he added.

“It was a terrible constraint to be operating under.”

Lenihan also told the paper that he has no regrets about his time in office.

“It was the worst economic crash Ireland ever faced and in my defence I can say that I stabilized the ship and kept the ship afloat,” said Lenihan.

“That’s all I could do. I think it’s tremendous now that after this election we will have a new government. I think that’s very important because it will allow us to move on as a people.”

Happy St Patricks Day to Irish folks wherever they may be.. particularly those having fun in Cheltenham..
what a lack of grace on his part...it is so typical...cover your tracks...Ireland deserves better, and who knows if that is what 's in place right now will prove to be better..the country must wait and see... Residents of this great state need to keep close tabs on what their government does...you can trust but you must verify going forward...transparency has been promised by Mr.Kenny. Lets hope this will be taught in the schools and universities, for all students...
Jacersagain: You are a Gentleman,Sir! ~ Saint Patrick will certainly put in a special word with The Boss for you!
Apologies, Townie, if I misunderstood your post on 15th at 9.06pm. :(
Aw,no,Jacers. You are hard on me. I always consider my words very carefully and you can see I ended my sentence "in the Dail" to avoid and reference to his illness. ~ We heard a lot about it as his handling of our Finances and his Government disintegrated, but I cannot recall it being mentioned once during the election hustings. I am not privy to the severity of his condition but I admit to being surprised that he didn't follow the other rats diving overboard early for their fat payouts, but stood and fought his ground. He deserves our respect for that.He also prevented Ireland collapsing overnight ala Iceland by guaranteeing all Irish Bank Deposits. (Even the UK Banks only guarantee £35k today!)It was a brave decisive move, but in his haste, he 'forgot' to limit it only to existing Irish depositors - so despite my frantic calls to warn him of the oversight - oversees depositors poured money into the (black hole) Irish banks before he corrected his mistake. His brilliant action that day saved Ireland; for if all foreign investment had been withdrawn overnight, all the money in the EU and the IMF would not be enough to Bail Ireland out. ~ He has always struck me as a decent, serious, caring sort of chap so I find it hard to swallow that he didn't stand up to Biffo and 'de Paaarty' and risk being sacked; to inform the Irish people of the hole we are in. So; a kiss and a kick for Brian the Brave. My allusion to his time in the Dail being short was to say he will realise, despite being honourably returned by his faithful elecorate, that his position is politically futile and his talents might be spent in a better way. ~ No, he never played 'the cancer card',jacers, and neither did I! Slainte! and a happy and Holy St Patrick's Day to everyone!
Brian the Ferengi..His home planet, Ferenginar, is the center of the Ferengi Alliance and is governed by the Grand Nagus and a Commerce Authority made primarily of the Council of Economic Advisors (formerly Board of Liquidators). Like most of their culture, their religion is also based on the principles of capitalism: they offer prayers and monetary offerings to a "Blessed Exchequer" in hopes of entering the "Divine Treasury" upon death, and fear an afterlife spent in the "Vault of Eternal Destitution".
jacers..He is not human..He is a Ferengi from Star Trek.
Townie.. that's an inconsiderate post.. We all know he's fighting cancer. He's human as you and me.
DON'T WORRY, I do not think he will trouble us much longer in the Dail.
Unbelivable..A rat if I ever saw one. This guy should have got the chop too.
Considering how much he has damaged Ireland, this jerk Lenihan should keep his mouth shut. Shame on the people in that district in Dublin who elected him again. Are they all fools? Yes, I guess.
Brian Lenihan comes from a family of typical power-hungry, greedy politicians (the story elsewhere on IC of Mary O’Rourke, his wealthy aunt, and her demands that her local party members foot expenses incurred in her failed election bid) is typical of a family that doesn’t know the meaning of ‘disgraceful’. Brian is exhibiting the brass neck of the Lenihan family - (remember his Irish Presidential-hope father’s laughable ‘mature recollection’ comments?) - in saying that HE provided leadership during Cowen’s tenure as Taoiseach. Yes, he did provide leadership alright - of the brass neck kind - to steal money off the Irish workers via his Universal Social Charge (tax) to pay for Irish commercial banks failures and the EU/IMF loan. The bluddy cheek of him! I’m just amazed that his constituents saw fit to re-elect him when Dublin people as a whole rejected FF in the recent general election.
Lenihan. Your duty was clear while in office and now you expose the choice you made wilfully. Typical two faced politician.
NO GOOD saying what a great jockey he was when the race he lost so badly is long over, and the old clod-hopper of a horse he rode;'Biffoboy' has been sent to 'the Factory!'
