Bloomberg for mayor a bet too far for Irish bookies

Michael Bloomberg: Irish bookies wouldn't gamble on him not remaining Mayor of New York

Mike Bloomberg hasn't been re-elected Mayor of New York City, yet, but giant Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has been taking no chances.

They reckoned he was such a shoo-in that they were only taking bets at 1-80.

Yes, 1-80. That means you'd have needed to put $8,000 down to win $100.

Mind you, with Bloomberg spending an estimated $100M on this campaign, he would have been well-advised to send some of his $16 billion fortune Paddy Power's way to get that back.

According to IrishCentral calculations, a small stake of $80M would have returned $1M.

So he only needed to get 100 suitcases stuffed with $80M to get the $100m back.

Now that's serious money.
