Bitter row over Irish corporate tax rate between Irish leader Enda Kenny and France’s Sarkozy

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and French President Nicolas Sarkozy clashed Friday night over Ireland’s corporation tax at the newly-elected Taoiseach’s first EU summit, according to the Irish Independent.

Mr. Kenny was confident of securing a 1 percent reduction in the interest rate on the bailout at the end of the month, but  Sarkozy, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel, demanded a change to the corporation tax system in return for the lower interest rate.

Mr. Kenny called the discussion with the French president “good, vigorous and vibrant.”

"I'm not sure whether you would call it a Gallic spat or not but obviously the French President has very clear views about the corporation tax rate for quite some time -- and then, so have I," he said.

The European Commission is set to publish proposals on a common set of rules for the collection of corporation tax across Europe.

Germany and France want to prevent companies from paying a lower rate of corporation tax in Ireland, without having a full operation in the country.

Germany and France are offering to be flexible on the EU-IMF package but only if the government compromises on the corporate tax base.  Mr Kenny is insisting he won't give anything away on the Irish corporation tax -- neither the rate nor the base.

Mr Kenny said a common corporation tax base across the EU "was harmonization of the tax rates by the back door and this would be detrimental to Ireland and to Europe.”

Enda should offer to do a "camp-David" style meeting between France, Germany, and the beneficiaries of the bailout...all in English, and broadcast C-Span style. I understand Slane Castle is available for events. Or perhaps Kilmanham "Guest House" would be a more appropriate venue. PBS's Rick Steves visited there, and it certainly has the historical gravitas needed.
THIS IS THE FIRST of many bloody noses Enda and Ireland will get. They better get used to it. Beggers can't be Choosers, be grateful for the money - use it wisely, and remember Ireland will not be free 'till it is all paid back. ~ ~ Btw: The telling 'hand on the shoulder' from Sarkozy and a playful punch on the arm from Cameron makes Enda look like a playgroup infant who has found himself at College with the 'big boys'. There are some bitter lessons ahead, I'm afraid, until Ireland tackles the REAL problem: The REASON they needed the Bailout in the first place!
You should have never voted two years ago to be part of the financial "European Union". You fought hard for your independence and freedom and less than 100 years later gave it up. Germany, France and the others who believe they don't have financial troubles will make you pay a dear price for their help. The first, raise taxes. That creates a lot of jobs and investment to bring you out of your recession but it sure will help France etc...
90% of the voters voted for parties others than Gerry Adams - the independents have clubbed together and have more TD`s.
Kenny needs to bring Adams into the picture to deal with Sarkozy. The Germans and Sarkozy only have respect for those who mean what they say.
@SeamusMor – I agree but sadly the Irish people have moved on from our aspirations and we have no control anymore over our destinies... it’s more about control of our children’s destinations these days. But I strongly support our Taoiseach on this cause. So will all the companies benefitting from the competitive rate of tax who employ a right few thousands of Irish people and so will their employees, not to mention their families... Cozy Sarky & Mrs. Meerkat’l will have to face all of them, their power and their might, not just our Taoiseach, if there is any attempt to make us ditch the rate of tax.
Does this mean book Enda is going to invade France?
"We declare the right of the people of Ireland to the ownership of Ireland, and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies..."
Enda Kenny is hardly in power one week lets give him a chance maybe he has grown a pair of gonads and will swing it for ireland.
Is Enda a match for any of those long standing financial mavens who has the Europe and world in the palm of their hands. Enda will return with his tail between his legs.
Fine Gael a European party not an Irish one...No Irish leader would ever support dropping of the Irish language and support selling off Ireland's Natural Resources to foreigners.
