Another Bishop had condemned the government’s decision to close the Irish embassy to the Vatican.
Bishop of Kerry Dr Bill Murphy joined the growing criticism of the decision in a radio interview at the weekend.
He told Radio Kerry that the decision made no sense and questioned the reasons behind it as relations between Church and State deteriorate.
“I do not believe it was made for purely economic reasons,” said Bishop Murphy. “Compare the estimated savings of about €700,000 to what some RTÉ stars were paid.
“The Holy See worked quietly behind the scenes and is a hugely important force.
“Ireland operates a mission to Ramallah in the West Bank, which is not a state, and closing the embassy just does not make sense.”

Lord Bannside/Rev. Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley says unionists will accept united Ireland - under crown! British Exchequer lends Ireland serious maundy money. EIIR/QE2 visits Ireland. [Martin Luther] Kenny nails 3[2] thesis to Dail door, picking fight with Pope Benny. Commissar Gilmore dissolves Irish Embassy to Holy See. Gay Mitchell thinks we should rejoin [British] Commonwealth. 'Tea-shock' gets cead mile failte(?) in loyalist north Belfast. Any connection?

I totally agree with cynicus................But also, didnt the vatican first do the same thing in some form to Ireland......Nothing would be better then for the world to cut off the vatican economically, politically, and religiously..................The same church that gave us teh endless hidden molesttation of children all over the world...... An "honor" shared with much of the US evangelical community............Whose leader Huckabee said at a conference called "renewing god in America" ..We've got to get them to pray - at the point of a gun if necessary. BTW most of the people down there dont actually worship any god. they really worship their killing instruments. One told me the NRA was too liberal for him.

Following the total lack of respect for the Murphy Tribunal by the Vatican and its puppet in Dublin, I do not see why there is a necessity for an Embassy in the Vatican. In any case, the Vatican should be about spiritual business and not matters of the world, finance and politics. As for Ramallah, is the Bishop being racist or just disdainful of other faiths? Perhaps, the Vatican should put a halt to the extraction of money from our State in the form of 'Peter's Pence' and such dubious hidden taxes on Irish catholic citizens. There is no place on earth with such an obscene display of mammon, pride and worldliness as the Vatican. Wouldn't Jesus be just worn out from whipping those boys from the Temple!!

Geariod, if you'd get your head out of the sand, your comment would read: "it is just repeating parrot-like accusations that the current (and still coming to light)have no basis". There's plenty of proof afoot, universally. Africa is still waiting on the sidelines.

The Embassy has (is about to) close. The decision of a Sovereign Government taken for reasons which have been well articulated. Its yesterday's news. Move on!!!!!!!!!!

A rather stupid series of comments,CaptainCon. Your charge that the pope is "up to his neck" in a conspiracy to cover up what I think you to mean the current sex-abuse scandals, is just repeating parrot-like an accusation, that does not have a shred of proof. In fact this pope has been at the forefront in efforts to change the whole ethos surrounding what up until now has been the disastrous and disjointed approach to sex-abuse cases in countries around the world.

Could some of these bishops be currying favor with the Vatican to hold onto their sees when the dioceses are reduced? Do they want to be fawned on by staff at the Vatican embassy in Rome? Who knows. End of an era.

Yes, we know the 'holy see' does a lot of work behind the scenes. We've heard all about it. The pope and cardinal sean brady are up to their necks in 'behind the scenes' work and they stand condemned for the style of 'behind the scenes' work they carried out. Sooner this lot are dead and gone the healthier the Irish nation will be.
