Bill Maher, host of HBO’s ‘Real Time with Bill Maher,’ has gone on the defense after being compared to Rush Limbaugh in his name calling of politician turned TV personality Sarah Palin. Maher has referred to Palin in his stand-up acts as a “c---” and Limbaugh referred to Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown University student, as a “prostitute” and “slut” after she appealed to Congress for wider birth control coverage for women.

The New York Daily News reports on Bill Maher’s explanation of the differences between him and Limbaugh after Maher spoke with Jake Tapper of ABC News. The comparison of the two occurrences of name calling has begged the question as to whether or not there is a double standard for liberals teasing conservative women as opposed to conservative men calling out liberal women.

Said Maher to Jake Tapper about Rush Limbaugh’s labelling of Sandra Fluke as a “prostitute”: “[Limbaugh] went after a civilian about very specific behavior, that was a lie, speaking for a party that has systematically gone after women’s rights all year, on the public airwaves.”

Maher added, “I used a rude word about a public figure who gives as good as she gets, who’s called people ‘terrorist’ and ‘unAmerican’... The First Amendment was specifically designed for citizens to insult politicians. Libel laws were written to protect law students speaking out on political issues from getting called whores by Oxycontin addicts.”

Maher went on to say that the contextualization of both his and Limbaugh’s name-callings were very different as well. Where Maher used the term in a stand-up comedy act, Limbaugh chose to do so on national radio.

“The bit I did about Palin using the word c--- was one of the biggest laughs in my act, I did it all over the country, not one person ever registered disapproval, and believe me, audiences are not afraid to let you know. Because it was a routine where that word came in at just the right moment. Context is very important,” he said.

Though Limbaugh has since apologized for calling Sandra Fluke such names, he did lose several advertisers from his radio show.

Sarah Palin, in turn, offered her own comments about the Limbaugh situation last month. Palin said that liberals who called for Limbaugh to apologize is the “definition of hypocrisy,” and that the same doesn’t occur for “leftist radicals who say such horrible things about the handicapped, about women, about the defenseless.”

Maher is one of those guys who never made it out of the eighth grade. Him and his buddy's on his show are like a bunch of eighth graders sittin around makin "potty talk" and giggling.
It's pretty clear Mr Maher is a VERY angry person, and the anger and hatred take precedence for him over humor. Maher seems to prefer a cheap laugh from the shock value of calling a female politician he opposes a c**t rather than doing the work of actually coming up with something clever to say. He's far too bitter to be actually funny. Maher reminds me of the sort of crude guy we've all known who always gets drunk at a wedding, or birthday, or office party, and starts saying filthy, offensive things about his wife or girlfriend. He'll try to pretend they're "jokes," but the hatred directed at his target is so palpable that you can touch it. These guys are always at least a little crazy, too, and everyone just sort of prays they'll pass out soon, so it will be over. Thanks everybody! He's Bill Maher!
I almost forgot Al Franken had some skits that I still laugh about today, And some of the things that come out of his mouth these days could keep saturday night live going for months.
I forgot about that show "politically incorrect" It was an oxymoron, as he was rude but politically correct and alas not that funny. You know george carlin was a lefty but funny as all get out, Richard pryor was a lefty and rude but funny as hell, I guess thats why I don't care for maher, he hides behind comedy but rarely is funny.
Maher has never shown any true intellect. He is just to politically correct to be a true thinker. Frankly, I think he should kill himself. Than he could at least be as cool as Kurt Cobain or some other worthless media whore. At least then I could believe he was really famous.
i'm not a fan of either linbaygh or maher but palin is dumb & fluke was not a prostitute.but i think it can be said they both put down women to earn a few bucks.low lifes.
Maher speaks about First Amendment right, to which he is entitled, as are people in the U.S., including Limbaugh. I ofter listen to Limbaugh but I've never heard Maher. Here is my questionto to both: Have either of you ever served in the U.S military, which defends our nation's great Constitution that guarantees us all freedom of speech?
Liberal have Maher, Conservatives have Limbaugh and Opportunist have Palin.
Not one person registered disapproval? That just shows you what kind of sexist jerks go to that guy's performances.
Manhattan, it's worse. Maher a hack, wanna be comedien, Palin is the draw for his act, much like Irish Central continually use Limbaugh to get interest in their articles.
Bill Maher is a foul mouthed, crude excuse for a human being. Funny, the left never knocks him like they do Limbaugh who compared to Maher is like an alter boy. Remember when he called the 9/11 murderers "heroes? Was that not as bad as calling someone a slut?
I think if Bill Maher made those comments standing in front of Sarah Palin or her husband, he would be picking his teeth off the side walk. But then again, Liberals always make those kind of remarks behind a persons back.
Maher plays to a liberal audience, so of course he's not going to get any complaints. Duh. I don't like him anymore than I like Limbaugh. I think they're 2 peas in a pod - arrogant, offensive, and big mouths...just my opinion.
