Speaking on MSNBC's "The Last Word" with Lawrence O'Donnell, comedian Bill Maher criticized how Bill O'Reilly dealt with his pre-Super Bowl interview with President Barack Obama. Maher called the Fox News host "unpatriotic.”
He said, "I just feel like the most difficult part of his job must be to quelch the rage that somewhere must be inside and say, ‘I'm the president of the United States, you don't talk to me like this. I'm not some left, I'm not Al Sharpton you know, I won this job.’
“And Bill O’Reilly, who claims he’s such a patriot, how unpatriotic in my view to treat a president that way."
However, Maher is now being criticized due to his tendency over the years to criticize former President George W. Bush. In 2006 Maher wrote an article entitled "Mocking Bush Is My Patriotic Duty."
He wrote, "Amid all the 9/11 anniversary talk about what will keep us safe, let me suggest that in a world turned hostile to America, the smartest message we can send to those beyond our shores is, ‘We're not with stupid.’
“Therefore, I contend -- with all seriousness -- that ridiculing this president is now the most patriotic thing you can do.
“No, it pains me to say these things, because I know deep down George Bush has something extra -- a chromosome. Cruel? Perhaps, but it may just have saved lives.”
At the end of his 2006 article he wrote, "That's why we owe it to ourselves, and our children, to never stop pointing out that George W. Bush is a gruesome boob."

Bill O'Reilly is a moron. The President treated him decently, but didn't let him get away with anything.

Republicans are always mouthing about patriotism as do the Democrats. Don't they know what Samuel Johnson said about it - that he said, " Patriotism os the last refuge of the scoundrel . . . . "?

Maher, like his Irish ancestors, is a Liberal, Socialist, hypocritical, idiot with a big mouth and pea-sized brain. He's your average Irish bloke!

O'Reilly may be a person with a different political view to Obama, but to myself, and others, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity,Ingraham,Gallagher, Bortz ( or whatever his @^#8&@$ name is) are the enemy. The enemy in the sense of not wanting me to to exist anymore !

I've watched O'Reilly over the last few nights, trot out his minions ."please tell me how good I was with the president" of course Morris and the rest obliged. O'Reilly has an over-inflated opinion of himself and the president showed dignity and class and made O'R look mean spirited and foolish.

Bill Maher hasn't been funny in decades. We saw him about 18 years ago in A.C. at Bally's and he was not funny, using all the old material, just about, from his early circuit years. Really enjoyed him way back when but he has developed a snooty elitist attitude that totally has us turned off.

Blame gamers do little to explain the outpouring of souls whom I admire like none other. Egyptians are an Amazing and Courageous people, up against the world's mighty and the positioned dictator who served his oligarchical brethern like none other. Mubarak was the plug in the dyke which served imperialistic rule, thus preventing people from breathing freedom. In spite of the dirty tricks by Big Kihuna who pays for a surrogate, a mercenary army to be employed as needed manage the ME. Even having been paid to serve the ousider, this army's with pride bursting from their chests had no choice but to admire their heros on the street. Long live a people such as we've come to respect and not the anti-Egyptian tripe of the Bible.

Patriotic - its the money stupid.
borefield | Feb 10, 2011, 01:24 PM EST
Bill Maher doesn't know the meaning of the words Patriotic or Unpatriotic. He just likes to hear his loud mouth going.
PhlutiePhan | Feb 10, 2011, 01:17 PM EST
I was surprised that the president did an interview with Bill O. Obama is trying to save his presidency by reaching out to the right. He feels that he will win independent middle-of-the-roaders in his quest for reelection. This was the Clinton strategy. I would say that Hillary will be his running mate so that she can then jump off and run on her own. Can you just imagine 8 years of the "Big O" followed by 8 years of Hillary? OMG

"Hypocrisy and selective amnesia are evidently the medical definition of" BOTH ends of the spectrum, at times. Maher was foolish to say what he did without also referencing his own comments about Bush, but he's right -- O'Reilly, who often suggested those who criticized Dubya were traitors, was being disrespectful by his own supposed standards (picture a smirk here). And the commenters on this thread are being just as two-faced as he is. But that's typical of the right wing freaks we now have in this country (picture a sneer here).

Two sharp-tongued Irishmen bashing each other. Both hoping for more attention, one from the right and the other from the left. Welcome to Entertainment America!

So Maher... How's That Hope And Change Working Out For Ya? I know of several airline flights departing LAX which could take you to any other country on the plant, however that is if anyone, anywhere else will have you. And why do peole inssit on referring to Maher as a comedian? He is about as humorous as as a heart attack.

BILL MAHER NEEDS TO RIDE OFF INTO THE SUNSET. HE IS NOT INTELLECTUALLY CAPABLE TO MAKE COMPREHENSIVE POLITICAL COMMENTS AND HE CERTAINLY IS NO LONGER FUNNY!
RobinOCork | Feb 10, 2011, 11:18 AM EST
Bill Maher is to learned political commentary what having hounds loose in the yard is to a picnic. He is without judgment or moderation, a whore for a laugh.
DLW12183 | Feb 10, 2011, 09:41 AM EST
Maher is an idiot and the rules don't apply to him. It continues to be ok for the left but not the right or center.

Reply to quixotic ---It sounds like you are talking about Chris Matthews.
chriswalsh | Feb 10, 2011, 09:14 AM EST
First let me say I am not a huge fan of Bill O'Reilly, however, I watch him sometimes and he is intelligent and puts on a good show if you like his style. I am sick and tired of how the Ob ama's are babied, everyone is treated like that, the issues are very importnant and unless he has a speech that has been written for him he never has the correct answer. Everyone president gets bombarded with unpleasant questions and if he cannot stand up to that then he is in the wrong job. That's O'Reilly's style stay away if you don't like it. (I am a Democratic)
quixotic | Feb 10, 2011, 09:06 AM EST
Obama should never have met with O'Reilly since O'Reilly is a pompous, self-centered bully/boob. How many times did he interrupt the President? About as many as he usually does because when he is about to be discredited he either bullies his guest, speaks over them, or does not allow them to finish their sentence but instead steers them off topic with another inane question/statement. It is clear that the right is more about winning the board game of politics than the real life issues facing Americans and the World.

Hypocrisy and selective amnesia are evidently the medical definition of "liberal."
