Bill Gates has claimed that Microsoft “did the key software” for Mac, and that his company deserves credit for Steve Jobs’ legendary Apple creation.

In an interview with ABC's Christiane Amanpour, Bill Gates claimed that “Steve and I worked together creating the Mac. [Microsoft] had more people on it, did the key software for it,” according to the Daily Mail.

However, Steve Jobs seemed to have hard feelings towards his competitor. In a biography published after his death, Jobs was quoted as saying that Gates, 56, was “basically unimaginative and has never invented anything, which is why I think he's more comfortable now in philanthropy than technology. He just shamelessly ripped off other people’s ideas.”

One possible explanation for this, Gates explained, is that Jobs felt bitter towards him due to the success of Microsoft. The Apple computer debuted in the 1980’s, but didn’t become successful until the past decade, and Gates believes that Jobs simply was jealous of his own success.

“'So the fact that we were succeeding with high volume products, you know, including a range of prices, because of the way we worked with multiple companies, it's tough,” Gates shared. “And so the fact that at various times, he felt beleaguered, he felt like he was the good guy and we were the bad guys - very understandable.”

Despite all of these hateful words, Gates did, at the time of Jobs’ death, claim that, “The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. I will miss Steve immensely.” Yet it appears as though now that Jobs is gone, Gates feels free to claim the Apple legacy as his own.

Anyone who knows anything about the history of computers will recognize what Bill Gates' role was and no one will ever claim that he was a creative genius. It's like saying Andrew Carneige was a champion of labor rights and anti-trust laws. But I will thank Andy for using a small portion of ill-gotten gains to build nice library in my hometown, and Bill Gates for trying to rid the world of some horrible diseases. Philanthropy soothes the soul, and revisionist history soothes the mind.
A philanthropist becomes such only after exploiting others for decades. We should be grateful for such "generosity"?
I started off in the '80's with a Commodore 64 at home and Commodore "Pet"s in my classroom. I bought stock in Commodore when I realized that its share price peaked around Christmas and bottomed out each summer, year after year. A few years into this "money pump" Commodore announced a revolutionary graphics machine called the "Amiga." It was to run a wonderful new OS that was accessed in a revolutionary manner and it could "multitask." I forget the name of the software group (Wosniak's?)that created the OS but it eventually morphed into Mac OS and Windows. BOING! Sadly Commodore could not compete and my money pump went dry.
When the first Windows came out it featured automatic compacting of files as they were saved and then uncompacted them as they were accessed later. This was the commercial product of a small company that Gates/Microsoft never contacted about licensing. When they brought up the point that this "Microsoft feature" was lifted complete with their programmer's notes the Microsoft response was, "Sue us. We spend more just on keeping lawyers on retainer that you guys are worth." I also remember Gates giving a speech in which he said that brilliant people write great software, but it takes a genius to steal it, and that he was the world's greatest genius. Yeah...right...I believe you, Bill.
