Documents from Governor Jan Brewer’s office on Friday showed that more than $1.3 million has been contributed to the appealing group while the rest had been sent by mail.

Brewer’s lawyers are appealing Judge Susan Bolton’s decision to block parts of the law that clamp down on illegal immigration. The decision was announced on Wednesday.

That afternoon Brewer’s cause received $75,000 in donations. Donations also surged after the United States Department of Justice filed to challenge the law on July 8.

On Thursday, Brewer referred to the blocking of the aspects of the immigration law, which would stop police checking the public’s immigration status if they are under suspicion, as “a bump in the road”.

Protests against the law have been escalating all week. In Arizona, 50 of the protesters were arrested outside the courthouse in Arizona as Brewer
applied to appeal.

On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters began their march at dawn and gathered in front of the courthouse as Bolton was giving her decision. They also marched on the office of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has made a crackdown on illegal immigration one of his main issues.

As the Sheriff’s deputies in riot gear intervened, 23 demonstrators were arrested as they beat the doors of his office. Dozens of others were arrested throughout the day trying to cross police lines, enter closed off areas or sitting in the street in peaceful protest.

“Sheriff Joe, we are here, we will not live in fear,” was the main chant of the day.

In Tuscon, 50-to-100 people gathered downtown. Half were protesting and the other supporting the law.

In Los Angeles, 200 protesters invaded a busy intersection. Police left them there for three hours before declaring it an unlawful assembly. They lay in the street in a circle.

In New York, 300 immigration advocates gathered in Manhattan. “We won a slight battle in Arizona, we’ve got to continue with the war," said Councilman Jumaane Williams, a first-generation Caribbean-American.

Though Bolton seemed to indicate that the state has a good chance of winning their federal-immigration-law-trumps-state-law argument, the key sponsor of Arizona’s law, Representative Russell Pearce, a Republican, said the state would ultimately win the case.

J Flanagan, you may well be right, but if SB 1070 is upheld it will be too dodgy for me to go there and see for myself, because I'm an immigrant myself. SB 1070 is not the solution. And a word of clarification. Right now there is a temporary injunction against parts of the law, pending, I think, a declaratory judgement on whether the law is constitutional. The press are trying to simplify this for ordinary people, but I think they are just confusing things by doing that. I'm not a lawyer (or a journalist, LOL!).
Our gov. is insane!!!! She should use the money to put into education since, from her buget cuts there are hundreds of teachers without work. Trust me, we are looking forward to voting out this one. She was never voted in to begin with.
Those who won't go to Nogales, Arizona, live there and see what it is like to live with anarchy, property destruction and fear use terms, no matter how untrue, like bigotry to support and otherwise unsupportable argument. People like JamesMurphy live in a vacuum and, as long as it isn't his problem, opposes any American protecting fellow Americans.
We support this new law its gotts start some where Heck where do we send out checks $$$
I actually think it's a good thing that Jan Brewer, the fascist governor of Arizona, and her supporters are appealing their blocked immigration strictures. The more Brewer and racist individuals like her assail illegal immigrants the more they strengthen the hand of the opposition and weaken that of her Republican cohorts. It may not happen in the next election but, as the Republican Party continues to become more and more the nation's Nativist Party and Hispanic voters swell their ranks, the right-wing and such fringe fanatical groups as the Tea Party will find themselves shut out of governing politics for good. The sooner that day dawns the better.
My wife and I just got back from vacationing in Arizona to celebrate our 40th Anniversary. We chose to go there to support the state. If people want to boycott something, they should boycott Oliver Stone's movies for his recent remarks about how Hitler was missunderstood and the Jews control all the media. His appologies afterward mean nothing. These words came out of his mouth because he believes this, not because he "misspoke".
Catmann we need to protect ourselves from whck jobs like yourself- insurgent communist army? Good Lord better that then an army of nutt jobs like yourself.
AMERICA MUST PROTECT ITSELF AGAINST THE INSURGENT COMMUNIST ARMY COMING UP FROM THE SOUTH TO HELP OBOZO OVERTHROW THE CONSTITUTION. AMERICANS MUST go to the Poles in November and Vote all NEO-COMMUNIST(DEMOCRATS) OUT
The good citizens of the United States are rising up. What is so hard to understand about protecting and defending our borders? A most basic responsibility of government. There is nothing so clear cut, it shouldn't be an issue to defend our borders and only allow in who we choose to let in through an immigration process.
The good citizens of Arizona will win
Right on. Where can I donate?
