A Dublin property speculator with several rented apartments in his portfolio is ‘homeless’ – after he was evicted from his palatial $3million mansion by the former Anglo Irish Bank.

Brendan Kelly, 71, and his 63-year-old wife Asta were evicted in amazing scenes from their five bedroom home in Killiney on Wednesday.

The pair had taken out a $2.6million loan with Anglo to fund their property investment business and ran into difficulties paying the mortgage.

They were served with a repossession order nearly two years ago.

Bailiffs arrived at their gated community on Wednesday afternoon when they forced the front door with a crowbar as crowds gathered on the streets outside.

The elderly couple were brought screaming from their home and refused to leave the front driveway of their home but were eventually brought out into the street.

They have now camped outside the property and are refusing to move ‘under any circumstances’.

They told reporters that previously ran a successful business in the fashionable tourist resort of Sylt in northern Germany selling Irish textiles to German holidaymakers.

At the height of the Celtic Tiger boom they sold their three German stores, trading as Irland Haus, for an undisclosed sum and invested their money in the Irish property market.

Kelly insisted to the Irish Independent that he and his wife, who have no children, are now effectively homeless as all of their other properties are currently leased.

A qualified accountant, Kelly said: “This is our family home. The other houses are leased and there are tenancy agreements in place.

“The banks absolutely ruined us. We brought millions of deutschmark to this country over 23 years and we invested everything we had - and they threw us on the road.

“We are going to camp outside the house indefinitely. I am not here to discuss my financial situation, I am here to draw attention to the manner in which these people physically evicted us.”

Well the house doesen't look like a mansion and it doesen't look palatial and it certentaly doesen't look like it was ever worth 3 million. I don't blame the old guy for not paying the mortgage, after all who brought the country to it's knees? How about the BANKS for a starter?
I felt sorry for this old couple, mainly in the way the old man was handled by the baillif, but he has 21 properties, mainly in the more expensive parts of Dublin. He just refused to pay the rest of the mortgage when the property value went down 2 years ago. The amount of money collected in rents from all the other properties would have paid for his final home which was massive twice over, just a greedy man.
"They were served with a repossession order nearly two years ago..." And what action did they take over the course of 2 years to remedy the situation? Seems like it was plenty of time to me. Either we are missing part of the story, or this was another rich guy playing the system, and who would have paid in the end? The little man...
Diabolical, Corrupt Anglo Irish Bank, headed by former Fina Gael politician Alan Dukes send in the forces to drag an elderly couple from there home, just like the 1800's. Treacherous B-----ds.To many people missing the point here and siding with the corrupt Irish politicians & Bankers, be it a an elderly couple in a country cottage or big house, its a diabolical act, shame on them. Like seeing back into time to the 1800's. We Irish better stand together soon or they will surly trod us into the ground just as they did in the past. The only difference this time is the so called Irish elite are the henchmen. Read your history at least in the 1800's people came from near and far to try and stop these Vultures.
Byethebay-Why is LoyalNation so convinced that it was American Corps. responsible for Ireland's economic downfall when one institution AIB lost the 31 Billion?
Sheer Bloody Poetry ! Dare anyone to say anymore ~
WoW! Bythebay how do they get away with it!
These people are far from poor. they own at least 4 rental properties. why didnt they sell some of these to pay off their debts? the eviction notice was sent 2 years ago. therefore they had 2 years living rent free. they should have sold all but one of their properties (at a loss) and paid off their debts.
Agree with you JohnnyMac. Let's just hope the guards are inching closer to Seanie Fitzpatrick down in Greystones. Now that's a video I would pay to see.
This, the same bank that blew 31 Billion Euros?
I understand they lost a lot of money - but it's hard to feel sorry for these folks - the Guards were just doing what they have to do. The people seem to have money coming in - unlike many others.
I heard stories of pensioners who have a home but no money to buy food..........Having a very expensive home that you cannot sell will never put food on the table...........This story is extreme, its the young who get made homeless in the years to come which will put the last nail in the coffin in Ireland.
