Killarney residents have reacted to furiously to a piece by Irish American journalist Dave Hannigan which lambasted Killarney residents for ripping off American tourists for years.

The piece was also critical of the Irish government’s decision to issue heritage certificates to the Irish diaspora, which Hannigan categorized as a “money grab sponsored by Dail Eireann."

Hannigan went on in the column in the Mail on Sunday to call the government decision "the shameless spectacle of a government department basically turning itself into the bureaucratic equivalent of Killarney", before continuing;

"Bad as it is when avaricious shopkeepers and publicans try to take advantage of sentimental old fools trying to get in touch with their ancestral roots, how much worse is it when the money-grab is sponsored by Dáil Éireann?"

One local businessman said that the journalist owed the town an apology for his remarks: "This is the same kind of nonsense we have listened to for years and it all gets a little bit tiring after a while," said one local accommodation provider.

A spokesman for the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation also hit out at  Hannigan, saying: "This was cheapskate and cheap shot journalism that reflects no credit on the journalist who penned it or the paper that published it".

Hannigan is based in Long Island, NY, and also writes for several Irish American publications. He is also an established author and his works include De Valera in America and Giants of Cork Sport.

I agree with the journalist,although the locals actions are of a desperate people. They are polite people,and the area is beautiful. All this Plastic-Paddy comments toward Americans,and the pedo priest scandals how soured me on ever spending money there again. I wish the Irish people the best,and good health.
What d’yez mean – “American tourist rip off”?? Killarney people have been ripping off all tourists, even Irish, for donkeys’ years. Still, it’s one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland; worth a visit and every penny you have saved for the trip.
Hey Hannigan. Shut the hell up. Killarney is a great place. Who cares if they make a buck. What have you done lately????
It's been my experience that no matter where one visits as as a tourist, being ripped off by some of the locals is to be expected. It certainly happened to me a couple of years ago when I was touring Killarney--50 euros for a jaunting trap ride at the Gap of Dunloe. I'd call that a bit steep. But, as I say, such extortion happens everywhere. Here, in the United States, one must often have to pay to visit an art gallery or museum--how sad is that?
Some people try to put a negative spin on anything. The journalist doesn't have to buy an Irish certificate or anything else if he doesn't want to.
When I travel I always ask the locals where they go for food and drink. Often you go a couple blocks off the touristy areas and get to meet real locals and have a good time. Killarney is a tourist town and has the usual touristy stuff and places. I was there in 2003 and still had a grand time. I go to Florida at least once a year and it's the same, ditto Washington, D.C.
It'as not fair to pick on Killarney, The whole Irish Tourist scene is a rip-off and now we have them charging 6 euro, I believe,to the Cliffs of Moher.
Does anyone know where we can read the original article?
Killarney has always been a tourist town. Tourist towns in the states capitalize on what tourists want - why shouldn't that happen in Ireland? Some tourists put up with the honky-tonk and glitz - others love it - and the outlets are much too American- but Killarney will always be admired for its beautiful lakes. The old warning "Buyers Beware" applies to any tourist destination.
You wish to talk rip offs go to any bar in an airport and have a beer. Travel cost what travel cost and the individual determines whether they got the value they were seeking.
I have been to Killarney a few times and really enjoyed the town. I never felt like I was being taken advantage of. Besides, if a town is a tourist town sort of like Killarney and they make money from us visitors then I don't see the problem. Come to the states like Florida and I am sure that we rip off our visitors worse. I
