A new report from Amnesty International has concluded that the sexual abuse of children by priests and church run institutions in Ireland, amounted to torture.
“The sexual abuse in the diocesan reports, and the sexual, physical and emotional abuse, the living conditions, and the neglect described in the Ryan Report, can be categorised as torture, and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment under human rights law.” according to the report.
Commissioned by Amnesty International, the In Plain Sight report follows the publications of a number of reports into clerical abuse in Ireland, the latest being the Cloyne Report.
Amnesty’s research included an opinion poll and found that some of abuse met the legal definition of torture. Some 84 percent of those surveyed in the poll felt that society should have done more to prevent the abuse.

The report was based on four major inquiries into clerical abuse in Ireland including the Ferns, Ryan, Murphy and Cloyne.
The report said that there was a “deference to” and “fear of” the Catholic church.
The Red C poll conducted in conjunction with the report found that half of respondents felt society would rather turn a blind eye to child abuse.

he Christian Catholic Church has rough i's members persecuted me for 12 years mos intensely after Settlement in 2007. Amnesty has Ignored this and failed to even hear me out. Ireland is Giving a Criminal Protectorate to those involved in my Persecution. Adult Survivors are most vulnerable trough and after specially after Settlement and Due Process to Human Rights Crimes and Further Psychological torture and Mental cruelty. While preparators ge amnesty under Civil Agreements so their Rights Removals are ignored. I have have no only Civil but Criminal and Human Rights Crimes commied against me in he las four years. Resuling in he Desrucion of my Life again a a poin of Closure, Healing and recovery. Now my Children under 2.5 both face permanent Abandonment and extreme Poverty in Thailand as result of Persecution when all I need is immediate Court to Limit the Damage. Why? Church Suppressed evidence against Paedophile Cleric from Gardai and Courts. So he Multi Offending Paedophile Cleric could Challenge the Statutes of Limitations on Reporting the Crimes so he and the Rest in the Murphy Report could evade Justice. the Cover-up includes current bishop. Murphy report fail to expose it. Can get no Authorities since 2009 to do anything. Have all evidence to convict. Priest got non custodial yet that sentence is commission-able with no dispute. He lied and deceived for 5.5 years at the expense of his Victim to get Lenient Sentence. His defence could not take Place if the evidence in the Murphy report was not Suppressed in 1999. the Bishop that took my Statement at the Archdiocese lied to me and had undertaken to provide any records the church had to the Gardai in 1999. He was the Direct handler of the Priest. 12 Years of Religious Persecution and Gross Injustice in revenge by the Christian Holy Roman Catholic Church.

The Psychology of any given Society is both revealed, and perpetuated, in how that Society treats it's children, and it's most vulnerable people... address that and you can change the whole society. Failure to address it ensures it's continuation.

Thank you "oldboreen" ... I have indeed come forward, reported, published, blogged and 16 years ago asked for help from my diocese with therapy. Still asking. Still waiting. Now there is a "process" in place so they tell me. My mother and father, also victims have come forward and reported...from their nursing home in Ireland. They asked for nothing in return. They received a rosary and an apology.

What are we doing JOHNTOBIN, trying to deflect one from the other. Priests have been a party to procuring abortions too, by coercing the mother and paying for it too, to protect who?
oldboreen | Sep 28, 2011, 04:04 AM EDT
'blessusnsaveus'you have my admiration for your courage in posting details of your terrible ordeal at the hands of a priest. It will shock many, some will will refuse to believe it-claim that you are seeking attention-exaggerating.Don't be deterred. These evil men will rot in hell. I beg you to publish your claims, not easy for you to do I know, but it may compel certain bishops to examine their consciences rather more than appears to be be the case thus far! God bless you. I would like to bring to the attention of your readers that Amnesty Iiternational is in favour of Abortion-in other words the destroying of innocent human life.

Blood sacrifice A priest gave me my first orgasm before I was old enough to know my body A priest tore my vagina with his fingers preparing me for planned penetration A priest gave me fifty years of recurrent nightmares A priest ripped my faith from my heart and peace from my mind This behavior was criminal - physically and spiritually And I am still treated for Post Traumatic Stress disorder, like a victim of war My mind is still tortured; my faith is in shreds; my hope has been stolen. And the bishops knew. So don't tell me it is just about individual criminals. An organisation payed and supported these men. An organisation covered up their behavior and sent them to new pastures to graze on the young. An organisation threatened and intimidated and controlled those who tried to speak out. That organisation shares responsibility like a government who looks away when its soldiers torture and rape innocent victims in war.

Knew you wouldn't be pleased with he finding Trealach, why haven't you spoken up as a concerned individual, a member of the society you make mention of, or taken out a public notice for instance codemming what s been done in your name as a Catholic: It was torture of the worst kind worldwide, some as young as 4years old for Gods sake with rosaries hanging around necks. You'd better take seriously intercessory prayer for the spirits of these young, in case you meet them in heaven one day.

"Some 84 percent of those surveyed in the poll felt that SOCIETY should have done more to PREVENT the abuse." And therein lies the problem. Society and the Government, are EQUALLY as guilty as the Paedophile Priests.

From a personal point of view, I dont think there is any real surprise in this report. Some people would do well to remember that torture can take many different forms. Torture of the body; but what of torture of the mind - a survivor of abuse so broken in mind body and soul that sooner or later they cannot live with what happened to them and they are driven to take their own lives. I feel genuinely sorry for those posters who are so impervious to this human experience, through conditioning. You are victims in this also!!

Absolute power corrupts absolutly! This is the kind of situation that makes regulations and inspections essential when a powerful entity, governmental, commercial or religous, has a vested interest in keeping its human abuses in the dark. While there are priests and nuns who are very good people, being a priest or a nun does not automatically guarantee a person's goodness. The only way to protect against further abuse is regulation and inspection of the RCC in its dealing with parishiners of all ages by the government and the church's laity.

All child abuse is torture. Yes, Amnesty is a joke - it should also have mentioned the abuse of children in Ireland by members of the community at large; it is still going on behind closed family doors, rarely getting noticed except by a few professionals who deal with children "disturbed" by it and hardly ever made public in the Courts of Justice.
rainbowbrew | Sep 27, 2011, 02:09 PM EDT
I imagine the Pope will say I had nothing to do with this and call it a day. This treatment of children is a really bad thing. I wonder how this will affect the trial of the pope and his commisares in the international court.

Have you been on another planet for the past ten years Porickseantuny.
CaptainCon | Sep 27, 2011, 01:37 PM EDT
Porickseantuny have you actually read any of the reports? Kids were routinely kept hungry and undernourished, and yes kids were routinely flogged and sexually abused. What would you call rape? You don't know whats in those reports mentioned do you?
glorybe1929 | Sep 27, 2011, 01:13 PM EDT
When I see pictures of the Pope inhis golden regalia it really turns my stomach. Jesus Christ would no more wear that "get up of lavish finerary " but the Devil surely would. Jesus was a humble man asking us to emulate the "son of God" in our everyday ways. How can anyone continue on, in this church of the devil???
AngelPrecious | Sep 27, 2011, 12:34 PM EDT
I think the form of abuse used by priests is as horrible as anything you mentioned, Porickseantuny! I do agree that Amnesty is a joke though!
Porickseantuny | Sep 27, 2011, 12:17 PM EDT
This stuff makes Amnesty comical. As horrible as the actions of the hierarchy were in ignoring abominable and criminal behavior, no one was flogged, starved or otherwise subjected to torture as understood using the English language.
