Almost half of all young Irish men believe that women increase the risk of sexual assault when they dress provocatively, according to a new survey.

The Irish based study shows that a significant proportion of male students believe that women who claim to have raped are partly responsible for it, the Evening Herald reports.

Almost 3,000 college students participated in a survey about their attitudes and awareness of sexual violence in May. The majority of students were in their late teens in first and second year of university.

According to the results, due to be published by the Sexual Violence Centre in Cork later this month, between 40 and 50 percent of males approved of the following three statements.

“Many women claim rape if they have consented to sexual relationships but have changed their minds afterwards (49.3percent of male students agreed with this statement).

“A woman who goes out alone at night or wears provocative clothing, puts herself in a position to be raped (44.6percent).

“Women often claim rape to protect their reputations (40.1percent)."

Ireland’s Sexual Violence Centre said that 80 percent of teenage sexual assault victims know their attacker and are less likely to report the incidents because of the Internet.

“One of the big concerns about modern technology is that incidents like these cannot be kept private, and young people will insult the victim, telling her she's a slut and so on," Mary Crilly, Director of the Sexual Violence Centre told the Evening Herald.

"They will use the Internet as a way to favor the assailant, all he has to say is that it was consensual and the majority will believe him because double standards are alive and well.

"It's not so much pornography online that has caused this increase in the number of incidents, because plenty of young boys watch the same videos and are not raping anyone.

"The ones who do it, do it because they can get away with it, they can say the girl was a tease and with attitudes not changing but clothes getting more revealing, people will believe them."

"It's heartbreaking to hear a young 14- or 15-year-old say that they feel it was their own fault because they were wearing a short skirt or had a drink. We should be judging the people who chose to take advantage of them when they were in a vulnerable position more than anything else," she added.

a woman should be able to dress any way she likes without being groped touched leered at or made the subject of sexual innuendo from fat drunken useless tattooed men who wouldnt stand a chance with a pretty young girl on a night out..a young lady should behave in a way that does not compromise her, getting blind drunk and falling over with your knickers round your ankles is not one of them.a woman who makes a false rape allegation for whatever reason,3 years mandatory.very serious crime against an innocent man.going up to tysons flat at 3 in the morning expecting a cup of coffee, not smart.who would be able to judge fairly some of the behavior patterns of today,i dont think any woman should be subject to anything against her will,no matter how provocative or outrageous her behavior.taking advantage of a drunken woman is as bad as stealing of a blind man..
so, why do people dress "sexy" ? don't people chose to send a message by the way dress. if you don't want the attention, don't put it out there.
My advice to American women who wear their trousers at half mast is to stop doing it. I welcome the mystique and would much rather see her drawers in the privacy of her or my bedroom.
So 50% of men are still BLAMING THE WOMEN and admit they are unable to control themselves. Sounds like the myth of Adam not being able to resist temptation and blames Eve ill Eve.
Almost half of young Irishmen believe sexy clothes put women at risk. So then this 50% do not trust themselves?
Fashion surely is more seductive then being naked- There is more left to the imagination; while being nude breaks down barriers, that keep people apart.
in reguards to the sexy cloths , my mother and father always made sure what i walking out the doors wasnt to "much", question is where are these parents??? why try to grow up before you should??? thats the problems the kids now a days wgat to grow up to soon.. enjoy life. girls outfits are way way out of control.. i have a 10 yr old and a 24 yr old i still look at what my oldest is wearing and if i dont like it i say it ... same goes for my nices..
The teenage girls go out half naked these days. While this in no way justifies sexual violence of any sort young girls need to be made aware of the realities of the world. The guy been wrong and a sex maniac is no consolation for a girl if she is raped. So young girls should listen to this survey and remember, and I think I speak for the majority of young men all over the world. We are not after women's minds when we meet ye first.Disappointing as that may be.It's just a nasty fact.
