Airports reopen as Irish battle snow to get home for Christmas – SEE PHOTOS

As Dublin Airport reopened this morning after 50,000 passengers were disrupted yesterday evening following heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. Right across Europe airport continue to battle with the elements in an attempt to get people home for Christmas.
Teams spent the night constantly clearing the runway at Dublin Airport. De-icing of aircraft began early this morning and it is hoped that the backlog of passengers will be sent on their way today.
Cork, Knock and both Belfast airports are all open but they also expect delays due to problems in airports across Europe.
At Charles de Gaulle airport an estimated 5,000 people are waiting for flights. Operations at London Heathrow, the world’s busiest international airport, are said to be returning to normal along with Frankfurt Airport, the biggest in Europe, after serious disruptions during the week.
The freezing temperatures in Ireland are continuing to hamper journey times. Police are asking that the public travel only when necessary and take great care due to freezing fog, ice and snowfalls.
Ireland’s National Road Authority have said that fresh salt supplies will arrive on Thursday and will be distributed immediately.
Met Éireann, Ireland’s meteorological services, have forecast further snowfalls along the coastal areas of Leinster. They also warn of continued sub-zero temperatures which will bring frost, ice and freezing fog.
Gerald Fleming, the chief forecaster said that a thaw would not be expected until Christmas Day at the earliest.
