The United States Administration is expected to sue the State of Arizona over a controversial recently enacted immigration law.

Hilary Clinton made the plans known when speaking to a local television station in Quito, Ecuador. The State “will be bringing a lawsuit” against Arizona, the Secretary of State said.

The new immigration law passed by Arizona makes it a crime to be in the United States illegally and would have massive repercussions for the thousands of undocumented Irish and others currently living and working in the United States passed the expiry of their visa.

She told the local Ecuadorian television channel how “President Obama has spoken out against the law, because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy.”

Arizona’s Governor, Jan Brewer, was not too happy at the news. The Administration apparently hadn’t even told the State before it broke the news to the TV station. She said “If our government intends to sue our state to prevent illegal immigration enforcement, the least it can do in inform us before it informs the citizens of another nation.”

Public opinion, however, seems to be in favor of the Arizona law. According to a recent survey carried out by ABC/The Washington Post, 58 percent of Americans would support the measure, 42 percent of whom “strongly” support it, while 41 percent stated their opposition to the immigration reform.

Senator Clinton also said during the interview that it was one of Barack Obama’s key priorities in office to introduce a comprehensive program of immigration reform, although she did not specify exactly what measures this would entail.

There’s been some speculation as to whether or not the statement represents official policy, as a previous statement by the administration had merely stated that it was possible that the Department would sue the State over the law.

The lawsuit, if taken, will be brought by the Department of Justice on behalf of the central Federal United States Government.

I respect people who comment on issues they have actually taken the trouble to research. The administration isn't pursuing 'unrestricted immigration' into the US. They are pursuing a path to citizenship for those who already live and work here. Legalization of low-skilled illegal resident workers in the US would result in a net increase in US GDP of $180 billion over ten years. That's nothing to sniff at. If you can not be honest about the terms of this debate or the economic benefits it brings to the nation (that outweigh the negatives) then you shouldn't comment at all.
hollaback: Would I be right in saying you're a fool? What a stupid cheek you have insulting people you don't know, all because they don't support unrestricted immigration into Ireland or the US.
No it's not according to me, it's according to the Cato Institute, the libertarian think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C.. It was founded by Charles Koch, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of the oil conglomerate Koch Industries, Inc., the second largest privately held company in the United States. If you're too uninformed or too stupid to know what your talking about that's your loss. But don't talk the undocumented and the US economy, because its an issue you know nothing about.
Really, hollaback? So why don't we import a hundred million more into the US, and maybe 5 Million more into Ireland. ---- We'll all be millionaires! According to you...
In 2009, a study by the Cato Institute, a free market think tank, found that legalization of low-skilled illegal resident workers in the US would result in a net increase in US GDP of $180 billion over ten years. The typical immigrant and his children will pay a net $80,000 more in their lifetimes than they collect in government services, according to the NAS. The Kauffman Foundation’s index of entrepreneurial activity is nearly 40% higher for immigrants than for natives.
ajreaper: Why should the US accept millions from Ireland? So that the irish can be replaced by all the Russians, Poles, Africans, Indians etc. who are filling up Ireland?
A silly political decision.
I've lived in AZ for over 40 yrs. grew up less then an hour from the border and have zero issue with folks wanting to live and work here- secure our borders, make the procedures to legally enter, live and work here reasonable. Keep out the drug dealers and other criminals and those that traffic in people (a secure border and reasonable laws would take care of those folks). George the US does accept immigrants but not millions from Ireland or from elsewhere in europe (or even 10's of thousands).
olovely: That's a very ignorant post. The US still accepts IMMigrants--but we prefer that they follow our immigration laws. Every year millions of aliens get the Green Card or become citizens. The Right Way, the Legal Way.
Too bad that someone in Ireland can't sue the Irish government for its Open Door immigration policy. The Irish people are paying thru the nose to provide welfare, child support, medical care, free education etc. for the hundreds of thousands of immigrants that the crazy Fianna Fail party imported. These Fianna Fail nutcases should be sued!
krisdaly you need to wake up and smell the coffee. in 2010 your grandparents could not come here legally from County Cork. there is no Ellis Island, there is no waiting visa, there is no welfare or education or opportunity. it's a shame they raised you (you're dumber than a box of rocks and a shame on their legacy). as the grandson of emigrants you have no excuse for not knowing that emigrants are no longer welcome here. you're spitting at your own ancestry.
My grandparents were legal immigrants to the USA from County Cork. They filled out the paperwork and entered the USA legally at Ellis Island, New York. They wanted to be Americans first and of Irish descent second! People come to the USA and enter illegally by crashing our borders and spit on our laws and want free welfare and educations. Their loyalty is to their home countries and they are only here for the money and benefits. They spit on our flag at every opportunity, and I say to them "GET OUT AND STAY OUT FOREVER"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the definition of the irony: The State Department sues Arizona for enforcing a law that they are too impotent to enforce. Usher in Comprehensive Immigration Reform!
As an Arizonan resident who witnesses the crimes of illegal aliens first hand, I would like to point out that your article omits the fact that the new AZ law only restates US Federal law. It has always been a crime to be in the US illegally (that's what the word illegal means); Washington has just decided it is more beneficial to ignore the law.
