Activist says Irish Americans must support Gaza flotilla

Speaking to IrishCentral.com Fiachra O'Luain outlines the role the Irish should play

Fiachra O'Luain has called on Irish Americans to support the second flotilla set to attempt to breach the Gaza blockade this November and to raise international awareness about the injustice of the Palestinians situation.

O'Luain, who is Irish American, was born in County Donegal but his father and family live in Massachusetts. He was recently honored with Palestinian citizenship in recognition for his efforts to end the siege of Gaza.

During this summer's flotilla which attempted to deliver aid to Gaza, breaching the blockade, O'Luain was Second Mate on the U.S. Challenger 1 vessel. He was beaten and held in custody for three days following the violent reaction by the Israel Navy to the International flotilla.

Recently O'Luain described the flotilla as a "way of expressing international outrage over ‘Operation Cast Lead’ and the siege of Gaza, without perpetuating the hatred and violence."

What he says is now needed is for Irish Americans to contact their local political representatives and to be the voice for those in Palestine.

Speaking to IrishCentral.com he said "Let them know that the injustices between Palestine and Israel are serious issues, that it's an issue that Irish Americans care about and that our public representatives need to make their position known. They need to show that Irish Americans do care about Ireland and America and they care about justice and that they want more responsible leadership."

O'Luain feels that Ireland and the Irish people living abroad (Diaspora) can be at the forefront of spreading this message due to our own history. He said "The Diaspora is such a part of Ireland and now we have another generation being put into economic exile. I think that we can relate to what's going on in other countries. We might not have had a gun pointing at us in Ireland but we the situation of our great-grandparents is being repeated in Palestine."

He believes that the Irish people are in a unique position in Europe and the United States to start a much needed logical dialogue about what is going on in Palestine. He said the Irish might just be the people who would very carefully point out that "criticism of Israel does not equate with anti-Semitism. Just as criticism of the apartheid in South Africa does not equate with the criticism of all white people.

"I think we're at a point in history that the international community needs to be directed into a logical debate and I think the Irish people are uniquely positioned to be able to point to which was this debate should go especially after our own Peace Process where we realized that these are political problems not religious ones."

Think everyone shoulld stay out of the Israel-Palestine bueiness and let them try to straighten out the mess. Everyone gettim involved will only agitate the horrible mess made by the British when they started the State of Israel.
Most of the posts here seem to be made up of a kind of confusion and misinformation dotted with little bits of fact and truth here and there.I take it the vast majority of posters here are Irish/Americans.Americans are heavily influenced and brainwashed by the media because America plays a large part in world affairs and the government needs the support of the people in foreign affairs,It will resort to half-truths or even downright lies in order to pursue it's aims.I don't think you have to look very far into the past to know this is true.Ireland's part in world affairs only extends to sending peace keeping forces into troubled areas and at times voicing a moral opinion.Ireland can afford to be less bias when it comes to world affairs and so the media can give a more balanced view of what is really happening around the world, because the Irish government is not on the world stage.Does this make simple sense?I find the majority of posts in Irish Central to be dismaying and shallow and their is an obvious lack of deep meaningful accurate study when it comes to foreign affairs and even more dismaying it's there when it comes to Ireland. When it comes to Irish affairs the Irish government also tell half-truths and downright lies and this also is confusing.Go beyond the smoke and mirrors and hearsay and media controlled governments.Dig deep and follow the money trail and you will find the truth to all you want to know.
I always though that Ireland was a neutral country. Now I read the Irish are sending troop, and now getting involve in this Palestine mess. Don't you know that the EU looks upon Ireland as one of it's PIGS, because you are having trouble with your debts. As my Irish-American Grandmother would say, "mind your own business, you have enough dirt on you door step to keep you busy" The Next thing you know you will have Palestin refuges settling in Ireland, while your own people are migrating out. After that the Muslim Palestinians will claim discrimination, and want hiring quotas. Sharia Law will be imposed for the Muslims. Look to Britian for you future, if you continue you world involvement. I've learned one thing about pity. You can have pity for the problems of poor people. You find the reason for their poverity, then you discover, that they brough it on themselvies. The world's most impoverish people are located in Muslim Countries. So if you must help these poor muslim, then you must solve their problem. The Celtic Christian Monks built converted the barbarians of the dirk ages to Christianity. If you feed the Palesinians without converting them to Christianity, then you are doing neither Ireland or Palestine any good.
The first floatilla must have worked. Since then a huge indoor mall has opened. Including an olympic size pool and retaurants like ROOTS. www.tomgrossmedia.com/mideastdispatcharchive
Freeing the poodle should be their only focus. Too long a people unfree having lost the head.
I read a couple of days ago that The Israeli government wants to make a deal with the Palestinian government. Palestine will get it's statehood and Israel will be permitted to rent certain areas. It makes more sense than what I've read in the past about what's being talked about. I wish them all peace.
how does withholding food and medicine from women and children make Israel any different than what happened to the Jews during WW2
M/V Rachel Corrie Safe passage ...Do not respond to any other name other than your call sign
George Dillon...go read your Bible...do you read the Bible...do RC's read the Bible? Go read the Bible...and tell me that Israel doesn't belong to the Israelis... Dennis what is this about two passport Jews...? You as an Irishman dare talk of two passports... There are lot of Irish in the States and Albion... Are they loyal to the US or to the UK or to the Emerald Isle? I wonder.
IandP you just cannot help yourself just admit that you are a racist bigot. As I said before go hide behind a 9yr old child with your mates from the IDF.No honour no guts.
plasticpaddy...If telling the truth about muslim islamic terrorists makes me a racist, then I will proudly wear that label. You may want to change your name to rubberroompaddy with your inability to recognize the obvious.
Maloney = racist
Israel is entitled to a free and independent nation! BUT so are the Palestinians!! When will Israel realise that the biggest security threat that Israel faces is the threat it causes by failing to recognise the rights of those in Palestine!! The more it abuses its authority and is oppressive in its policies to Palestinian People it creates angry children who grow to be angry teens and then they become what you might call terrorists!
Seanny, you have neither a sense of justice OR respect for human life (that's a joke coming from a 'progressive'), when they apply to anyone who disagrees with you -- and particularly Jews. And again I say (repeating myself from the other post): go hide behind YOUR much-smarter conservative kid. You could learn something from him.
IandP go hide behind a 9yr old child and get him to open your packages. What bravery from the IDF.You lack a sense of justice and a respect for human life maybe your a sociopath.
