The LE Eithne docked in Philadelphia

A little piece of Irish America has docked at Penns Landing in Philadelphia.

The Irish navy vessel LE Eithne (the LE stands for Long Eireann, or "Irish ship") arrived in the City of Brotherly Love this morning.

The ship docked near to the Irish Memorial and was greeted by a fireboat fountain on its arrival.

The ship is here to take part in commemoration ceremonies for Commodore John Barry who was the first commissioned officer in the U.S. navy.

Barry - who came from County Wexford in Ireland - was based out of Philadelphia once he joined the navy.

The LE Eithne will be open to the public today and Thursday, between 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Tomorrow, the crew will take part in a ceremony on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. on Independence Mall.

The current skipper, Cmdr. David Barry (no relation to John!) said trainees aboard the ship were also gaining some valuable trans-Atlantic experience.
