An Air Canada plane traveling from Frankfurt, Germany to Toronto was forced to divert to Shannon Airport on Friday after a 79-year-old woman reportedly became disruptive on board and assaulted a cabin crew member.

According to a Twitter report, the woman, who is believed to have been traveling in First Class, “went crazy” and had to be restrained. She also scratched and bit at least one crew member, reported the Irish Mirror.

The flight crew was alerted, and the pilot contacted the Irish Aviation Authority's (IAA) North Atlantic Communications Service center at Ballygirreen in Co Clare, advising them of the situation and requesting authorities be on standby for their arrival in Shannon.

The Boeing 777-300 jet was over 1,000 kilometers north west of Shannon when the crew was forced to turn around.

Aviation fuel had to be dumped over the Atlantic to ensure the jet could touch down within safe landing weight limits. Crew initially reported a problem with the fuel dumping procedure but the issue was resolved, the Irish Independent reports.

Gardaí, airport police officers, and emergency services were all standing by for Air Canada flight ACA-877 when it landed at around 8.15pm.

A Garda spokesman said the woman was arrested and taken to Shannon garda station for questioning.
