@antoman: It is unfortunate that most Irish People still consider that it is the poor who commit crimes. Yet the truth is something very different.

@LoyalCitizen-Given the vast amount of money we have to repay the IMF and we only a island with a population of 4 million or thereabouts. It must surely have dawned on people by now that politicians and others have been screwing the taxpayer for a long time now to feather their own nests. Some Like Haughey accrued so much money he was able to money his kids and their kids too,,to the extent of even affording them an Island to holiday on off the west coast. All all the expense of the taxpayer.

@antoman: He can afford to with the amount of subsidies his father gets from the EU Farming Policy. Some reports say that the calls are untraceable. Haughey and Traynor used opinions in accountancy and the money was never traceable. Funny that everything is untraceable for some people.

Dail Eireann has its own ethics committee. I am not sure what they actually do????!!! Who's really going to judge the corrupt.

@antoman: The role of Ombudsman has grown in recent times and the role of the Ombudsman is to keep people away from proper courts. Only the courts can deal with crimes and treason. Politicians setup the Ombudsman of Ireland and they constitute another layer of law and a filtration system to reduce the amount of involvement of the Judges and Garda, especially when ombudsmen use opinions illegally.

@LoyalCitizen-Then perhaps there should be an ombudsman for the people. With powers to hold politicians to account and press charges on behalf of the people. We have various ombudsmen already. Why not one that is elected and representative of the people?Of course this would bring into question who has the real power in Ireland when a politician, even the Taoiseach can be hauled before the courts and jailed by someone who is doing the bidding of the people.

This money was stolen from the Irish Taxpayers. Somebody made the calls. As the particular phone was identified, it should be simple enough to establish who was 'on duty' in the offices at the time and bring them in for 'questioning'! I'll do it! ~ ~ The RTE response completely misses the point. Typical of the Morons of the Montrose Marshes! Bring them all in, and lets make a start on cleaning up the runaway level of Irish corruption!

Its amazing how this twit Healy-Rae abuses Dail Eireann facilities for a silly little Tv program and it makes international news. Successive so called Irish Governments have been stealing from social welfare recipients for decades and using opinions to hide the details, which is crimes against humanity and no journalists can turn it into a story.

The debacle is distastful to say the least, particularly for Kerry people, the folicly challenged and the makers of tweed hats. Its a good opportunity for the phone company for facilitated the calls to give the E4000 to charity.Free publicity.
