Such camel-dung students allowed to talk only in the toilet and the Church stealing all the gold! What trash, no wonder ordinary people still have crazy ideas about Christianity when the pagan Romans thought they crucified a donkey- the Palm Sunday entry of Jesus- and ate babies- communion- when JFK ran the Knights of Columbus sword was to kill Protestant babies! It still happens, same "stuff" different stories.

It will never end because its like an enormous pool of oil underground slowly being pumped up to the surface.......In the USA I've read that sabout $2 billion has been paid in damages with about 50-60 million catholics.........
In Ireland the amount paid is about $2B also. With 6 million catholics...............A suggestion that we may have only scratched the surface of the mess.......How did the priests etc get t his way?............Unnatural celibachy for sure. Forbidden to masturbate. And i remeber reading somewhere that in Boston MA, in the seminary there , students were absolutely forbidden to talk with each other anytime except in the toilet.................That fundamentally is called mental molestation..............Given that molested people often become molesters themselves, its not surprising whats happened...........the torture chambers never have just one instrument - they have many in many forms. And why did the hierarchy cover up these vile crimes. Surley its about money and power..............Maybe its because they also were molested and then molested others as priests etc.

No, sexual abuse of children is not unique to the Catholic Church but any other organization seems to come in a very distant second. Soon the only interest the population will have in Catholicism is examining the large empty stone structures all over the country the once brought people together in prayer.

@Allan07 - my my, still shooting from the hip without checking your facts I see. If you can bring yourself to do so, you will probably find that the US Episcopalian (Protestant) Church has had just as many Ministers charged with Child Abuse as the Catholic Church in the USA; in some States, even more so. However, dont think you have to let a little thing like facts get in the way of your particular view of the world; you havent before, so why start now :)

Whats new the Roman Catholic Church is a corrupt organisation that investigates itself. How corrupt can that be? Of course when claims are made the police are not informed as the Roman Catholic Church believes they are the only people whom can investigate? All sexual abuses should be reported to the police either in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. The head of the RC in Ireland was informed of cases in the 1970's and did nothing about it. Why not? Because he felt it was someone elses responsibility. In other words he made a decision to do nothing as it would result in financial compensation to the victims. In Londonderry the Roman Catholic Church took 10% of the takings on a Sunday and put it aside for the victims. No-one knew about this except the bishops and the priests. The money was then used to bribe the families of the victims to keep quiet and say nothing to the press. Of course when the cat got out of the bag all hell broke lose. How is it right to cover up a crime by committing a second one in the form of bribery? Thats the Roman Catholic Church for you. One minute the priest is forgiving you for your sins, the next hes committing indescent sexual acts upon you and the next hes offering your family a bribe. Of course you have to sign documentation to say you will not discuss the case with anyone once the family have agreed to accept the bribe. In Londonderry families got £10,000. How evil is the great Roman Catholic Church? Sinners the lot. It is only the Roman Catholic Church that has committed these crimes. No protestant church to my knowledge have been involved. The RC Church is full of paedos.

SeamusMor made by greedy people trying to cash in on the Catholic Church's sexual abuse gold rush. Shame on the litigants; shame on the lawyers!" The gold rush? whose gold? The Roman church stole most of it in the first place, so why worry.? Also how can you sit there and decide that litigants are not real victims? That is contempt of court, so you know. You have no proof.

The Herald article says that "Six complaints relating to the year 2000 onwards were made to the National Board For Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC)." The problem continues.

SeamusMor is correct. These have to be old cases, so the report and the usual crud replies on IC are typical. excuses for not believing and seeing the human-divine/sin-grace reality of the Church. I also know that most are what are called "boundary violations" as the US Catholic League for Civil Rights reported there - touches and slaps on the bum- in the USA, as well as homosexuality for older teens. and few if any are of the egregious sodomy and that horrific sick conduct that seems to be what most believe is what happened to all the violated minors.

under 300,its getting better, hypocrites.i just feel sorry for the genuinely religious people ,priests and nuns who are tainted by these terrible acts and accusations.i cant understand why the full weight of condemnation and disownment of the church does not fall on these people, make it plain once and for all that the church positively has no place within it for such practises?thank god i,m an atheist.

I do not believe that there were 237 new cases of abuse last year. I would find it easier to believe that the 237 reports were of abuse that may have occurred decades ago, and were made by greedy people trying to cash in on the Catholic Church's sexual abuse gold rush. Shame on the litigants; shame on the lawyers! Hilda, be a real journalist and reveal the dates the alleged abuse occurred!
