Dan McLaughlin and his wife Rita were the winners of IrishCentral’s summer sweepstakes, which was open to every one of our members. Simply by signing up as a member of IrishCentral, or already being listed as member, they nabbed themselves a pair of roundtrip tickets to Ireland after Dan’s name was randomly drawn from our database.

McLaughlin, from Pelham, NY, plans to travel to Ireland in January or February. So far their only firm plan is to get to Galway and on to Cork for a couple of days. Their grown children, Dan Jr and Michelle Marie, may be joining them also.

The winner told IrishCentral that he has family roots in Ireland. McLaughlin said, “My father was born and raised in Ireland.  He is from the small town of Carndonagh, in Donegal County. My father was one of 16 and only he and one sister emigrated to New York. The rest of his family remained in Ireland, so as you can imagine I have many, many cousins that live in that area.”

This will not be Dan and Rita’s first trip to the Emerald Isle. He explained, “My wife and I and my other five brothers and two sisters have visited [ my Irish cousins] many times over the last 30 years.  We have a very close connection to all of my cousins in Ireland.”

The couple are also really excited that this unexpected trip to Ireland is giving them the chance to explore others part of the country.

Dan said, “My wife, (who by the way is first generation Italian), is really looking forward to this trip since she is going to see another part of Ireland instead of just visiting my cousins in Donegal. Not that she does not like my relatives BUT she would like to be a "tourist" and see other areas of Ireland. (I guess I can't blame her since I am always "dragging" her to Carndonagh.)”

Dan came across IrishCentral while browsing online and returns to read the local news from Ireland and celebrity news. He said, “I enjoy the information that IrishCentral gives me especially due to my family connections to Ireland...I look forward to enjoying your publication going forward.”
