Censored priest Brian D’Arcy has joined the calls on Cardinal Sean Brady to resign as leader of the Church in Ireland.

The well known Northern Ireland cleric said on Thursday morning that Cardinal Brady should ‘reflect; on his position.

New claims have emerged that Cardinal Brady failed to protect children from notorious paedophile Fr Brendan Smyth.

Fr D’Arcy, who revealed last week that his Sunday World column is now censored by the Vatican, has called on Cardinal Brady to quit.

But he has also warned that the Church in Ireland may struggle to recover from this latest crisis.

“I would find it hard to continue if I was in the position of the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland,” said Fr D’Arcy on the Newstalk radio station.

“But the Catholic Church has a major credibility problem and I don’t think changing Cardinal Brady will give it a fresh start.

“The problem is that if Cardinal Brady goes the ordinary people of Ireland won’t have a single vote in who replaces him.”
