Police investigate criminal charge for hate letter against severely autistic teen (VIDEO)
Father of 13-year-old says he believes the author of the abuse letter is “dangerous”
The Canadian authorities are considering filing criminal charges against whomever wrote the letter to the Ontario-based Begley family suggesting they “move to euthanize” their severely autistic son.
Although the family believe the author of this letter is dangerous the letter is not considered a hate crime. Durham Regional Police Service issued a statement on Tuesday which said that “despite the hateful language used," the content of the letter "falls below the threshold for a hate crime.”
"However, there are other criminal code issues that are being considered.”
Max Begley, a 13-year-old who was diagnosed as being severely autistic when he was a baby, was the target of the message. The letter castigates the boy’s family for allowing him to play outside.
The Begley family explained that Max spends the mornings during the summer months at his grandmother’s, where the letter was sent to. One of his favorite pastimes is to bounce balls in the backyard.
Part of the letter reads, “That noise he makes when he is outside is DREADFUL! Its (sic) scares the hell out of my normal children!!!!!...They should take whatever non retarded body parts he possesses and donate it to science."
The author who signs off as “one pissed off mother” tells the Begley family to “go live in a trailer in the woods with your wild animal kid" and to do "the right thing and move or euthanize him!"
"Either way we are all better off."
The boy’s father James told CNN, “If someone is sick enough to not only have those thoughts, but to write those thoughts out and then to mail them they should be considered dangerous. We are all concerned."
His father added that his son is not aware of exactly what is happening but said “he sure is getting a kick out of all of the attention."
