A petition to instate a memorial for Bobby the donkey, who has died from starvation in Donegal, has garnered nearly 600 signatures so far. The petition, organized by the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary, looks to create a memorial to remember the cruelty against Bobby, as well as calling for changes in legislation to make animal abusers more accountable.
Bobby the donkey was found in 18 inches of mud in a shed in Fanad over the weekend. The Belfast Telegraph reports that the tiny foal may have been trampled on by up to 11 bulls that were also in the same shed, which is nearby to the popular tourist attraction Fanad Lighthouse.
The Donegal Donkey Sanctuary came to rescue the starving Bobby after Gardai were tipped off about the alleged abuse. Bobby, however, died shortly after he was brought to the Sanctuary at Raphoe in Donegal. Gardai supported the Sanctuary in their efforts to rescue Bobby from the farm, while local people came to express their anger for the animal abuse at hand.
Another foal from the same farm as Bobby is feared dead as well after disappearing days before Bobby was discovered.

Danny Curran, organizer of the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary, said that this was one of the worst cases of abuse he had encountered since founding the Sanctuary back in 2007. Curran said, “If a donkey is well fed it is warm and can withstand a lot. If they do not get enough to eat they are vulnerable to pneumonia which is what happened here. No one bothered with him at all and then he was housed with cattle who trampled his weak little body into the muck.”
Following this incident, a petition has been put forth that looks to create a statue in memory of Bobby the donkey in Donegal. The petition’s WEBSITE, entitled “Justice for Bobby,” calls for not only a memorial statue, but also to “seek changes in the law to make people accountable for their actions.”
Should the petition, which is being circulated online and via Facebook on the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary’s page, garner enough signatures, it will be delivered to the Minister of Agriculture at Leinster House via cart and donkey.

Georgie, maybe we should stop giving visas to qualified medical staff and see just where that gets us? Maybe a shortage of skilled people will be good for the Irish ecenomy?

palmeiras--I understand that the Irish are importing psychiatrists from Pakistan. Why not make an appointment with Dr Khan Ali?

True...or maybe they were 'Papal' Bulls. ;)

Dano.Don't rule it out!! The Yanks have these deadly trained navy seals. ;))
DanOLoingsigh | Jan 07, 2012, 07:58 PM EST
for the record, seanomelb reckons these bulls were trained by the RUC/MI5/Brit Army/West Brit/Blueshirt/Orange fanatics, and sent over the border to discredit animal lovers down here...just another mean, despicable action which will be rightly condemned by all right-thinking patriots...

georgedillon/woundedknee,I bet you are the typical stereotype of the obnoxious american--loud, fat (make that obese)and a total assh...; I told you long ago to jump in the sewer with the rats; it seems even they would't have you.

bogsidebunny, who do you think you are calling people ignorant? americans go to Iraq where they murder and torture tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of innocent people. You are the brutes. I bet you put this down to "in the national interest" nonsense. When people in the u.s. are as ignorant and uneducated as you are about anything outside their own little few blocks and know nothing about the "outside" world, then they end up making statements like you have made. Now go back to school you twit and finish 8th grade if you're able to.
Sparklet | Jan 07, 2012, 11:03 AM EST
Just noticed that a post I did earlier isn't here. I think it was something along the lines of the idea that anyone who can ill-treat animals, won't treat people much better.
Sparklet | Jan 07, 2012, 11:01 AM EST
A friend of mine was guilty of ill-treating a dog. When confronted, she said it didn't matter because animals have no souls. I was literally lost for words. Cruelty always matters.

The change in the Irish is so sad. Only a generation ago, the Irish venerated donkeys, because they had the folk tradition that Christ had ridden into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. I remember back in the 1980s, an old boy in the Kerry Gaeltacht explained to me, in the language spoken by countless generations of his forefathers, that the donkey bore a figure of a cross on his back ever since he had served Christ. The old guy maintained that the cross was a "bronntonas o Chriost fein", a gift from Christ himself, and was even able to show me what might be taken for the outline of a cross on the animal's back. All that gentle learning and culture is dying or already gone in Ireland, and we see the soulless horror that will replace it.

better the money be used to feed & house other animals then a statue.
Springfield9 | Jan 06, 2012, 11:09 PM EST
I have a soft spot for Donkeys. I know it's crazy but there was a little black donkey when I was young. If you look at animal abuse (and there's plenty to go 'round) the best cure is a healthy fine. Jail time is no threat as it is a Judge's mood that determine's that. Let's make it Eu 5000 per donkey.
Searlit | Jan 06, 2012, 11:06 PM EST
Very disturbing and sickening. I hate to see any human or animal suffering. To think the poor donkey suffered this way. It's no way to end his life. I couldn't even read the whole thing.
palmeiras | Jan 06, 2012, 08:26 PM EST
george dillon/wounded knee, you're a low life. There's plenty of abuse in your own country--of people aswell as animals. Just ask the misfortunate Indians to which your second password pertains to.
timbobdennehy | Jan 06, 2012, 05:34 PM EST
life is worthless now be it human or animal,in no particular order.
ciaradexy | Jan 06, 2012, 03:33 PM EST
GeorgeDillon-''you Irish'', but I thought you class yourself as irish? Why the change of heart? Irish when it suits and when you think you know what youre talking about yeah?
normacathy | Jan 06, 2012, 02:54 PM EST
Everyone-readers of this column, members of the community, folks who know the perpetrator of animal neglect & cruelty -all should be aware that many maybe most 'perps' of animal neglect & cruelty are just as nasty, cruel, neglectful &/or abusive towards other folks-their children, spouse, elderly, etc etc. The Gov't should investigate ALL areas of the 'perps'life. Everyone's eyes should be wide-open!
Carlastowe | Jan 06, 2012, 01:01 PM EST
Animal abuse is a crime , here in America we are striving to make the penalties harsher. They should be that way EVERYWHERE!! Where can I sign?!!
GeorgeDillon | Jan 06, 2012, 12:03 PM EST
Look on this photo, you Irish, and hang your heads in shame. I have posted elsewhere on this site about the widespread animal abuse in Ireland, but I was ambushed by the clowns' chorus (posters such as sirpeter, OLoingsigh, TomSwinford etc) and accused of being a liar. Shameless skunks.
KerryLKing | Jan 06, 2012, 11:25 AM EST
makes me sick to my stomach. God Bless the Sanctuary for trying to help. And Ireland....please strengthen your laws to stop any future atrocities towards any innocent animals! Especially, since Ireland is where the man who founded the SPCA (Society for the Preventation of Cruelty to Animals) lived his life!!!
jamieLM | Jan 06, 2012, 11:09 AM EST
A person has to be a heartless individual to be involved in the horrible abuse of a helpless animal. The posters below have said it well and I agree with all of them.
merefalow | Jan 06, 2012, 11:06 AM EST
oh ireland, from whence springs this cruelty to poor dumb creatures,it leaves an indelible stain.i have seen at first hand the brutality at cattle livestock markets, you big beefy moronic farmers wielding your big sticks with such brutal thoughtlessness, you should be ashamed.obviously not all but enough of it to sicken anyone who attends.
ConnieCobe | Jan 06, 2012, 10:57 AM EST
I sincerely hope and pray that the owner of this poor animal is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law! Shame on you(owner) for allowing this to happen to this beautiful little donkey!
Skibberrean | Jan 06, 2012, 10:40 AM EST
This is just another sad and disgusting example of " MAN'S STUPIDITY AND SELFISHNESS and COMPLETE LACK OF COMPASSION AND TRUE LOVE OF ONE OF GOD'S BLESSED CREATURES!" I AM APPALLED AND DISGUSTED.
pugsmom | Jan 06, 2012, 10:35 AM EST
I, too, get physically ill when I read about the horrible abuses people heap upon defenseless animals. Why couldn't this wicked monster of a "person" call the sanctuary, or SOMEONE, to take care of this poor little thing? "A (person') character is judged by the way in which (he) treats creatures that are unable to defend themselves." Obviously, the non-human entity that owned Bobby, and the other animals, is a soulless, evil cretin, not worthy of using up any more oxygen.
offalymike | Jan 06, 2012, 09:45 AM EST
Ifeel sick to my stomach just thinking about the poor little animal, iwould like to sign that petition.
