After 16 years on the lam James ‘Whitey’ Bulger from the Irish, Boston neighborhood of Southie has been captured. Local’s reactions in the South Boston Irish American community was one of utter surprise after authorities nabbed 81-year-old gangster, wanted in connection for 19 murders, in South California.

Kevin Stuart (71) said “You’ve got to be kidding. CAUGHT!..Around here, he’s as big of a deal as bin Laden.” Stuart spoke to Bloomberg from Mul’s Diner in the Irish American community of Southie.

“He was a pretty lucky guy, really, to get away with it for so long… The real question is whether or not he rolls over on anyone. The bet on the street is no. He’s an old guy, there’s no real reason he needs to do that” said Michael Dore (47) who works at the South Boston Community Health Center.

Tom Tracy (72) has lived in the neighborhood since 1970 and was an acquaintance of Bulger. He said the image that Bulger had tried to cultivate, that of a champion of the working class was a false one. He said “None of this Robin Hood stuff you hear is true.”

He also believes that Bulger will not be of any help to the FBI. He added “He probably already has an escape plan.”

Rob Alexander (33) said “There was a lot of folklore that surrounded him…He brought a lot of drama.”

What seems obvious in Southie is that the folklore of Bulgers as a gangster is deep rooted. Many of the interviewees refused to give their names. One woman said “I’ve got sons. I don’t want to get them in any trouble when they’re running around out there.”

Alexander added “Most people don’t like him down here,” Alexander said. “But they respected him because they feared him.”

Bulger was at the top of the FBI’s Most Wanted list and was wanted in connection with 19 murders. The government described him as a “major organized-crime figure from South Boston.”

On Wednesday night he and his 60-year-old girlfriend Catherine Greig were apprehend at their apartment following a tip. This tip came just one week after the FBI launched a daytime TV advert campaign in an effort to gather information.

According to the government Bulger worked as an informant for the Government in the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1995 he was indicted for racketeering violations he was then indicted for several murders.

Internationally Bulger became a household name with the release of Martin Scorsese’s 2006 movie “The Departed”. The hugely successful movie was set in Southie and featured a Bulger-like character played by Jack Nicholson.

I bet some of his old cronies are sweatin' it! If any of them are left! As well as some dirty cops! No big secret what the Boston PD was like then.
He smeared his Family's reputation. His brother Billy done a mountain full of favors for his constituents, he got them all started in Jobs with the State, The MBTA, The City, State, phone company, Edison (NStar). There are literally thousands of people that owe their American Dream to Billy Bolger. It's a human tragedy that Whitey had to tarnish all the good that was done. He will have to meet his maker for all his heinous crimes. Actually there is no word in the English Dictionary that describes his crimes. May all the innocent people that died at Whitey;s hands rest in peace.
Just another low life, Nothing to be proud of
Only saw "The Departed" movie about James Bulger; who Jack Nicholson played as out of control and violent...frightening man. Knew an Irish family from Boston who had a 'tough row to hoe', who moved out in the early 70's when Maureen was pregnant. My Irish family moved to Chicago during the depression; it was different there. My mother told me that actor/dancer Donald O'Connor went Austin High School at same time as she in the late 30's-early 40's. Danced on the tabletops...I can remember my Irish Grandpa taking my brother and me to Casey's bar in Chicago, where he hung-out/socialized with other Irish grandpas... all very pleasant and innocent in the late 1940's. Chicago then seemed different than Boston as people have experienced it was for the Irish... but my brother and I were only young children... We were out of Chicago by 1950, very young.
Let's See if he actually makes it to a trial. And if he does, it'll be interesting to see and hear who he brings down with him. He was the first pick in the latest Howie Carr death pool today, and the guy who picked him just may win.
I wonder where the got the $800,000 in cash which was found in his appartment.
He was a small time crook, big time rat. The FBI (Famous But Incompetent) sucked up to Whitey. He has no more than a low lever informer for the Feds. They allowed him to kill at least 19 people. Put him in maximum till he dies.
another usama protected one. having served to rat like rev sharpton his trial will drag till he expires regular type.
Now if he can only pull an OJ and stack the jury with Boston Irish Hoodlums.
What is the difference between being 81 in a rest home or 81 in protective/medical custody in prison? Basically, he got away with it. You're taking much "life" away from him at this point.
I feel sorry for his brother too - but when he took the 5th when Whitey became a fugitive he sealed his own demise. At that point it's William or Whitey and he chose to his brother over his own self. Noble but he has no claim to credibility or respect when he does that. It's our Irish curse of loyalty...sometimes at our own expense.
I feel badly for his brother William, a loyal friend of mine, a gentleman and a scholar.
It is never too late, your crimes catch up with you someday. No matter what you think you got away with.
This is 100% positive. He's a murderer
