Even the smallest villages in Ireland knows about the power of Twitter these days. That's why Ireland's most famous tourism groups like Tourism Ireland, Failte Ireland, Bord Bia and Good Food Ireland have joined together in a campaign called #IRLday - to create positive tweets about Ireland and top Twitter’s trending topics.

The campaign was created by the makers of the Irish tourism app firm PocketNative.

"This idea revolves around the visit of US President Barrack Obama in late May," PocketNative’s John Twohig told Silicone Republic.

"Let's get Ireland trending - this has grown over the last 10 days and now has the support of the wider tourism industry in Ireland, the idea being that we tweet about Ireland in a positive light on the day," Twohig said.

The plan is that at 2PM Irish time (9AM New York time) on the day of Obama’s presidential visit at the end of May, the group hopes to get people tweeting with the #IRLday hashtag - and all Twitter users will be encouraged to tweet about anything of Irish interest, including the gorgeous scenery. It's the kind of exposure you could never pay for - if it works.

Obama is currently rumored to be visiting Ireland around the 22-23 May, and it's understood he he will explore his Irish roots at Moneygall in County Offaly, where Obama’s second great-grandfather Falmouth Kearney hailed from.
