Irish actor makes poignant return to Broadway
Irish star Liam Neeson returned to the center of the theater world in New York last night in his first public appearance since his wife Natasha Richardson’s death.
Neeson revisited Broadway just a month after theaters there dimmed their lights in honor of Richardson.
Neeson, 56, accompanied by good friend Ralph Fiennes, who will star together in the remake of “Clash of the Titans,” attended the opening night of the Broadway production of the historical drama “Mary Stuart.”
The gracious Irish actor smiled for cameras on the red carpet as his buddy, Fiennes, wrapped his arm around him.
Also present at the opening were stage vets Matthew Broderick and wife Sarah Jessica Parker, who famously embraced Neeson last month during the dimming of the lights on the legendary New York strip.
It’s rather fitting that Neeson reemerged to the public scene for a Broadway production. The New York theater scene was a magical backdrop to actress Natasha Richardson’s life, which was cut tragically short on March 18, and Broadway set the stage for her great romance with Neeson. The couple first met on the set of Eugene O'Neill's “Anna Christie” in New York in 1993.
Since his wife’s death, Neeson has had the constant support of friends such as Fiennes, and Richardson’s family. Richardson’s mother, Vanessa Redgrave, and sister, Joely Richardson, accompanied Neeson and his two sons over the Easter weekend on a trip to the family’s favorite holiday spot in St. Tropez.
