An Irish potato diet may well be what you need, perhaps to start the year off to drop that extra weight you have been dragging around since Thanksgiving.
Chris Voigt the head of the Washington State Potato Commission lost 21 pounds in two months and dropped his cholesterol by 60 points on a potato only diet. He and his doctor were astonished. He did it to prove to health officials in the state that potatoes wee rich in all the right kind of nutrients and should not be banned from school meals
The spud loving Irish may prefer this diet to any other. Here is what needs to be done as outlined in ehow.com
1. Eat only potatoes, morning, noon and night,. Eat them baked, mashed, steamed, roasted, and juiced, but never fried.
2. Never add milk or butter . use Chives, mint, cumin, turmeric, fennel, caraway, paprika, dill, nutmeg, rosemary and fresh garlic. Use potato juice or herbal teas to aid in making mashed potatoes.
3. Very important -- Leave the skins on the potatoes. The skins account for over 75% of the potato's mineral value.
4. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas.
And that is it-- simple really.

Finally, the potato is in vogue! There is NOTHING IN THIS WORLD LIKE A GREAT BAKED POTATO! Oh, by the way the juice is the cooking water. You cannot "milk" a potato as far as I know.

Chris Voigt does not look well!

Well said. Irish spuds are good to and for diabetics.

Mr Voigt overlooked the Slavic twist to this--make some into Vodka! Salinte'

I love my potatoes but I cannot eat them morning, noon and night. Maybe I will try this diet with potatoes for two meals a day.

I use Earth Balance spread, instead of butter. It contains all the healthy omega 3 fats. It melts, cooks and tastes like butter. I think it's safe to say that if you eat only vegetables you will lose weight, whatever kind. No, I don't work for this company, I'm just sharing a good thing. @Dublinjas: are you cooking those potato breads on the stove or baking them in an oven? They sound good.

Would be concerned about the lack of fat in the diet, which is essential for the body.

Given the current Economic catastrophe in Ireland we may have to re-consider the marvellous spud not as a 'weight loss' novelty but the sustenance of survival as per our great-grand parents. None of whom boarded any Immigration boat bloated with obesity or over indulgence. Even when the crop was in full flower and plenty on the table. Mashed potatoes using herbal teas and seasonings sounds too 'New Age' and somewhat daft. May as well eat wall-paper.

sounds good to me.

I would love to try it.

You had me right up to using herbal tea to mash potatoes.
safarimayo | Dec 03, 2010, 07:13 PM EST

PanieBarb | Dec 03, 2010, 04:19 PM EST
Interesting.......Wish I'd heard about it years ago. the easiest, least expensive diet ever!!
greenferrett101 | Dec 03, 2010, 02:03 PM EST
Potato juice or herbal tea instead of milk to mash them?!?!? no thanks
LindaAnn | Dec 03, 2010, 01:33 PM EST
I could do it with strawberries, but I doubt it with potatoes.
SeamusRua | Dec 03, 2010, 01:31 PM EST
Herbal tea = whiskey.

A potato without butter? No way. Growing up with Irish born grandparents we never had a meal without potato's and I still don't.
OGeibhnnaigh | Dec 03, 2010, 01:01 PM EST
A grand bit of news that. Could it that the Brit Landlords knew this all along and they were really benevolent patrons when they took away from us virtually everything but the spud?
Whitepark | Dec 03, 2010, 12:37 PM EST
Well I never met a potato that I did'nt like but I'm not to sure if I could have them three time a day but I may give it a try anyway.

Jaysus, I hope it works!!! Happy New Year!!!
ciarrai | Dec 03, 2010, 11:07 AM EST
I remember the figure as 12 pounds of potatoes a day consumed by each Irishman prior to the Famine.
boo1113 | Dec 03, 2010, 11:03 AM EST
I knew there was a reason I loved potatoes.!
Dublinjas | Dec 03, 2010, 10:49 AM EST
Up to the time of the Great Irish Famine Millions of Irish people had subsisted on a mainly potato diet, but not just subsisted...Thrived in a strong and healthy manner. So it stands to reason that there must be essential nutrients to be had from the humble spud. Who'd thunk it.
MikeRock | Dec 03, 2010, 10:47 AM EST
Kate, Really BAD advice. A balanced diet, exericise, no-smoking, low fat, and a lot of common sense is the best advice.
Dublinjas | Dec 03, 2010, 10:33 AM EST
Make yourself a really good potato bread to fry with your bacon and eggs at the weekend, 2 cups of boiled and cooled or leftover potatoes to 1 cup of self raising flour mix well (get your hands in there) roll the dough out to 1/4" thickness on a lightly floured board use a suitable size pot lid to cut a round shape then divide it into 4 with a pizza cutter lift with a nice spatula or fish slice lifter. bake in a non stick pan or griddle over a medium high heat. check each side every few minutes. when cooked cool on rack. after cooking your Rashers cook your potato bread then your egg.. I developed all these methods and recipes myself over years.
Dublinjas | Dec 03, 2010, 10:20 AM EST
It's not Quite a Superfood but you can make it one by following this advice, Add 1 whisked raw egg and 1oz of butter to every 2 pounds of freshly boiled mashed potatoes while they are extremely hot and mix thoroughly, The heat of the potatoes cooks the egg but in a very special way. This then is a super body building Superfood.
Searlit | Dec 03, 2010, 09:45 AM EST
I love potatoes, and have never given them up! They are a superfood containing all the amino acids and lots of vitamin c! Pratai go bragh!
BallinaLass | Dec 03, 2010, 09:33 AM EST
This is really interesting. Cecil Woodham-Smith's classic book on the Famine (and other sources) says that Irish people subsisted solely on potatoes in the pre-Famine times, with each person consuming several pounds of potatoes a day. I was amazed at this, and wondered how the people didn't get rickets or other nutritional deficiencies. I get this Voigt fellow proved it's possible, at least in the short term.
maganancy | Dec 03, 2010, 09:16 AM EST
I do have a question - is potato juice the water used to cook them or can you actually juice a potato?
