An Irish potato diet may well be what you need, perhaps to start the year off to drop that extra weight you have been dragging around since Thanksgiving.

Chris Voigt the head of the Washington State Potato Commission lost 21 pounds in two months and dropped his cholesterol by 60 points on a potato only diet. He and his doctor were astonished. He did it to prove to health officials in the state that potatoes wee rich in all the right kind of nutrients and should not be banned from school meals

The spud loving Irish may prefer this diet to any other. Here is what needs to be done as outlined in ehow.com

1. Eat only potatoes, morning, noon and night,. Eat them baked, mashed, steamed, roasted, and juiced, but never fried.

2. Never add milk or butter . use Chives, mint, cumin, turmeric, fennel, caraway, paprika, dill, nutmeg, rosemary and fresh garlic. Use potato juice or herbal teas to aid in making mashed potatoes.

3. Very important -- Leave the skins on the potatoes. The skins account for over 75% of the potato's mineral value.

4. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas.
And that is it-- simple really.

Finally, the potato is in vogue! There is NOTHING IN THIS WORLD LIKE A GREAT BAKED POTATO! Oh, by the way the juice is the cooking water. You cannot "milk" a potato as far as I know.
Chris Voigt does not look well!
Can't get enough of them! Love them spuds!
Well said. Irish spuds are good to and for diabetics.
Love it!
Mr Voigt overlooked the Slavic twist to this--make some into Vodka! Salinte'
I love my potatoes but I cannot eat them morning, noon and night. Maybe I will try this diet with potatoes for two meals a day.
I use Earth Balance spread, instead of butter. It contains all the healthy omega 3 fats. It melts, cooks and tastes like butter. I think it's safe to say that if you eat only vegetables you will lose weight, whatever kind. No, I don't work for this company, I'm just sharing a good thing. @Dublinjas: are you cooking those potato breads on the stove or baking them in an oven? They sound good.
Would be concerned about the lack of fat in the diet, which is essential for the body.
Given the current Economic catastrophe in Ireland we may have to re-consider the marvellous spud not as a 'weight loss' novelty but the sustenance of survival as per our great-grand parents. None of whom boarded any Immigration boat bloated with obesity or over indulgence. Even when the crop was in full flower and plenty on the table. Mashed potatoes using herbal teas and seasonings sounds too 'New Age' and somewhat daft. May as well eat wall-paper.
sounds good to me.
I would love to try it.
You had me right up to using herbal tea to mash potatoes.
think i/ll try it....
Interesting.......Wish I'd heard about it years ago. the easiest, least expensive diet ever!!
