President Obama could face Guinness shortage on his next Irish visit
G8 summit hotel in Fermanagh has yet to renew its bar licence
President Barack Obama may have to skip a pint of Guinness with Vladimir Putin at the G8 summit in Fermanagh next year – unless the Lough Erne hotel renews its bar license.
The five star property – where Rory McIlroy has a house – is currently attempting to renew its drinks license at Enniskillen Magistrates Court.
The Lough Erne hotel will play host to the leaders of the eight richest countries on the planet at the G8 summit in 2013.
But Judge Liam McNally has told the hotel that he will not issue a new drinks license before he receives key documents from the resort which is currently in administration.
The case is back in court next week with Judge McNally expected to grant the Tourist Board Certificate and Entertainment License needed to renew the bar permit.
President Obama expressed a fondness for Guinness on his previous visit to Ireland when he visited his ancestral homeland in Moneygall.
He also brought his distant cousin Henry Healy for a pint in Washington on St Patrick’s Day this year.
Now Healy wants the Irish government to extend his cousin’s visit for the G8 conference and invite him south of the border.
Speaking to the Irish Sun newspaper, Healy said: “Wouldn’t it be a fantastic opportunity for the Government to issue the invitation. The first visit was one that many people did not believe was going to happen.
“The way I look at it is that another visit will more than likely happen now that he is in the White House for another four years.
“It’s early days yet but we had just six weeks’ notice in 2011.
“He did say he wanted to return to Ireland and if his daughters Sasha and Malia return with him it would be nice to bring them to Moneygall.”
