It's been a case of 2011 picking up where 2010 left off as far as things in Ireland are concerned.  Going through the Irish papers after the post-New Year break doesn’t bring much good news, but it was especially shocking to read that this year’s Meteor Music Awards, Ireland’s equivalent of our Grammys, have been canceled for this year.

A statement on Monday didn’t elaborate as to why, but it’s got to have something to do with financial constraints that are only growing bigger thanks to Ireland’s ongoing recession.

"Since their inception in 2001, the Meteors have become synonymous with music in Ireland and have celebrated the best of Irish and international music, as well as recognizing up and coming home-grown talent … we wish to take this opportunity to thank all those who have participated,” a statement from the show’s organizers said.

The Meteors have indeed attracted a host of A-list talent since their inception, including U2, Elton John, Amy Winehouse, Snoop Dogg, the Script and so many others, not to mention a whole bunch of celebrity presenters such as Colin Farrell, Charlize Theron and Padraig Harrington.  The show also raised in excess of $1 million for charitable causes.

There’s no word on if they’ll return next year or beyond. Sad.  Nothing seems to be untouchable in Ireland these days.
