Will Susan Boyle really destroy Simon Cowell’s career?

Susan: should make her own decisions
Susan: should make her own decisions

Susan Boyle is heading towards meltdown. If she falls apart, the fallout could upend Simon Cowell’s "unstoppable" career.

So suggested a Huffington Post writer yesterday. Andy Pemberton argued that Cowell’s success is intimately tied with his discovery of Susan Boyle on “Britain’s Got Talent.”

“Susan Boyle is not in control of her vehicle,” Pemberton says. “And if – or rather when –  she crashes out for good, who are the public likely to hold responsible?”

Several things are wrong with this argument. First of all, how do we know Susan is out of control? She may be lonely, sure, and she finds fame hard. In an interview earlier this week her brother Gerry said she needs “24-hour care” – but her fans hope that she receives that care. "She needs to be looked after," Gerry told People magazine. "The travelling and the whole [fame] thing is exhausting. She still has her anxieties."

If Susan is floundering, there is help at hand, and we should be reassured rather than worried that her family are there for her. Indeed who wouldn’t struggle, after such a meteoric and sudden rise?

We’ve come a long way since the days of Marilyn Monroe, that beautiful woman destroyed by the pressures of work and fame, as well as by her own demons. Susan’s fans are more supportive than the movie-goers and industry of the fifties and sixties, and it is to be hoped that her employers and minders are too.

Pemberton ends his article by warning Simon Cowell to “Stop this madness” and prevent Susan’s life being ruined, and, more importantly, ensure she does not end up harming his own prospects.

It is patronising to assume that Cowell can order Susan about. Susan’s career has nothing to do with Cowell’s, nor should she retreat from the public eye because her behavior might damage him. She is an independent woman, with a special talent. If she no longer wants to sing, or decides to take a break, fair enough: but her choices should not arise from thinking of people like Cowell. They should be her own.

And if anyone's career is "unstoppable" it is Susan's.

I think it is time for 'Irish Central' to decide to stop leaning towards becoming a tabloid. I am very disappointed about IC's jumping on the cheap tabloid bandwagon. With her Irish roots, IC needs to be supporting Susan Boyle for the national treasure she is. Know anybody else who has sold 10 million albums worldwide lately?
Is that all Ms. Kelly can think of to write about Susan? I think Susan is doing great.
Why do folks think Lennon wrote the song "Help" barely a year after the Beatles hit North America's top ten. Life just got too crazy, even with the aide and comfort of three other Beatles and Brian Epstein.
I agree with Letscheck.. the Huff Po has been around for a few years and is not an official news site. It started off as an irreverent site for newhounds. News people around the world do love it though and borrow from its postings, ironically making it sound legit. I never visit its trash. I agree with Antoinette's article though... Susan's voice will be around long after Cowell.
Is Huffington Post really Obama's puppet?
Susan must detach from those brothers.
The Huffington Post just came up in the past year and was pushed forward by Obama as if it were a real news source. It is really just a blog, the "reporters" are not real reporters, and no one should pay any attention to anything that comes out of the Huff Po. It exists for one reason: to pretend that it is a real news organization, so Obama can use them when he needs to get partisan back-up in the news, or to drive the news in the direction he wants. I doubt Simon has ignored Susan or that she will somehow bring him down. HuffPo is whistling in the wind in an effort to keep readership up and eyes off Obama's mistakes.
I won't even think that Simon can order Susan around. Susan is an adult, smart woman. I believe that she respects and obeys whatever her brothers say more than what anybody says, not even Simon.
The tabloids should stop making medical diagnosis about Miss Susan. Every time someone has met the lady face to face, they have found her to be a stable and charming woman. Check out the interviews of her on various talk/news shows on TV: The Today Show. CBS Sunday Morning recently. The Oprah interview, all testify to the fact that Miss Susan is indeed thriving far more than the gossip mongers would have us to believe.
If that's the case about her brothers wanting to take over her career - and hefty earnings - then that is very disturbing! Her brother Gerry declared, about five minutes after Susan's video went viral, that he was (a la Cowell) now opening a talent agency and recruiting talent himself. I think you're right about a few of her siblings - stirring the pot.....
The bros might not want to destroy Simon's career; they might just want a slim piece of the pie which can be still huge to them.
I think Simon & Susan make a great team. But her bros might not think so and they might want themselves to be in Simon's shoes.
Destroy Simon Cowell's career? Susan Boyle is the only person who has humanized this man and made him more popular than ever. If Susan's You Tube audition got over 300 million hits - people saw Simon as well. They also saw her clean his clock which was even better. However, he has admitted that he now has a duty of care to Susan, indefinitely, and appears to be ready to keep that commitment. Problem is - he can't move in with her and, apparently, none of her many siblings are in a position to do so, either. So, she needs an entourage so she doesn't have to be alone as much as she is. It must be terribly hard to be alone and be as famous as she is. Either way, I think Simon and Susan make a great team.
busterbrown, yes her family does mean the world to her, or they did. Will they still mean much now that they're telling such personal things to the world? That's not something a loving brother does and not something that's going to help her very much if she's really having some trouble. I'd think they could come up with a better way of helping.
Right you are Buster Brown. Susan's family means the world to her and when fans decide that she should be isolated from them because the fans want more of her then the fans need a reality check. Anyone thinking Susan Boyle's family only cares about money has not been listening to Susan or her family and are not thinking about what Susan Boyle needs. They are rather thinking about their own obsession with Susan Boyle and fear of losing her.
