Having secured his leading man status with highly respect turns this year in Jane Eyre and X-Men: First Class, Irish actor Michael Fassbender is now in the running to play lead in a remake of Robocop.

'I can’t talk yet, it’s too early to speak, but there are some actors I like. I really like Fassbender, I’d like to talk to him — I’ll talk to him. There’s a possibility and there’s a lot of other great actors that would play RoboCop. But that’s the idea, to film around January, February, March.'

Fassbender as RoboCop certainly makes for an interesting mental image but it may not come to be. For one Fassbender has said all he wants to do between now and the new year is return to Ireland and rest up from his punishing schedule (which recently saw him win the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival for his forthcoming turn in Shame).

But tell that to Padilha, who may only want to hear the word yes from the increasingly respected Irish actor.
