For somewhat older readers there is "Water Street" by Patricia Reilly Giff. Set in Brooklyn among Irish immigrants and their children, this book chronicles the trials and tribulations of young Bird Mallon and Thomas Neary, who learn some harsh lessons about life and love as the Brooklyn Bridge is constructed right outside their window.
