A good aul session in a pub
A good aul session in a pub

If you are upstate in the Catskills Region this weekend or looking for a picturesque drive with Irish music as the icing on the cake, there’s a nice little party brewing in the Schoharie Valley in the town of Breakabeen on Route 30 north of Windham or south of Middleburg, New York. Young music whizzes Dylan Foley on fiddle, Dan Gurney on accordion along with Eamon O’Leary and Ryan McGiver (vocals, guitar and bouzouki) will play. There is also a lovely dance troupe called Criost An Ri local in the area who will kick things off from 4-5:30 p.m. prior to a supper break from 5:30-7 p.m., followed by a concert from 7 to 9 p.m. and a closing session. Admission is only $8. It takes place at the Breakabeen Grange Hall. Call 518-827-8073 . . .

On Friday, June 12 there will be a special gathering at the Kerry Hall (305 McLean Avenue) in Yonkers where the veteran Galway musician Pete Kelly will be honored by the Irish music and dance community for his many years of service as a teacher, performer and dance band leader.

The Kerry Association has linked up with the Michael Coleman Club CCE and the HOPe charity that always hosts ceilithe throughout the year at the accommodating Kerry Hall where the Pete Kelly Premier Ceili Band is a mainstay to host this event. Music will be provided by John Reynolds, who as young fella was one of Kelly’s students in the Shannonnaires Ceili Band, joined by many other musicians and dancers who want to wish Pete well on the occasion.

It all takes place from 8 p.m. to midnight, and there will be sandwiches, desserts and other refreshments and the Kerry Hall has a nice little bar with a wonderful pint of Guinness a popular choice. For more information contact Gerry O’Shea at 914-237-4957 or email to jamesgoshea@gmail.com.
