U2 returned to their hometown in a blaze of glory on Friday night to open the first of three nights at GAA headquarters in Croke Park.

"We are so young - as a nation!" bellowed Bono as the band roared into their set under a clear sky after a heavy day of rain on the northside of Dublin.

The band did not forget the singing legends that Dublin has produced, and paid tribute to the late Ronnie Drew by performing the famous ballad "The Auld Triangle.”

The band also highlighted the plight of Burmese political prisoner Burmese Aung San Suu Kyi over the course of the concert.

The foursome played songs from their new album ‘No Line on the Horizon,” but also regaled fans with the hits that have made them one of the biggest acts in the world.

With two more gigs to come tonight and Monday, fans can expect more of the same from the band that call Dublin home.

The Irish capital will reap the rewards of the mega group's homecoming, with an estimated €50 million windfall expected from U2’s three concerts in the city.

A few beautiful days for all concerned.
