Travolta's heartache at son's death: 'It's been a rough year'

Bookmark and Share

John Travolta was in the middle of his new movie "From Paris With Love," when his 16-year-old son Jett died Jan. 2, 2009, on vacation in the Bahamas.

It's just over 12 months since Jett's tragic death and Travolta says it's been a heartbreaking time.

"It's been a rough year," he said. "I’m not going to say it’s not. But we’ve been doing a lot of healing. We’ve worked with our church and with each other and our friends and our family.

"It's been hard. We've worked every day on it as a family and as individuals. It's the worst thing that's ever happened to me — bar none. But I think the help is helping us."

Travolta says that playing his crazy character, Charlie Wax, was a distraction from the grief.

"I've never felt more of a flow of support and love as I have in the past year and we needed it. ... You're kind of a sinking ship and you need all the king's horses and all the king's men to keep your head afloat. And we had it.

Now Travolta is taking time to promote his new film and commit to other projects, like flying in aid relief to tragedy torn Haiti (Travolta is a pilot and owns his own 747).

"I think help is probably the biggest button on the planet. People need to help each other. They want to feel like they can help and when you have the opportunity I think most people do help and I had this rare, rare privilege to have this big, empty plane in my backyard and I filled it with supplies and doctors and it was an awesome opportunity."
