An open-air concert hosted by MTV will headline a three-week festival in Belfast to mark the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, the Associated Press reports.

The popular music channel will return to the city a mere six months after hosting the European Music awards there. Stars such as Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars descended on the city for the award ceremony last November.

Titanic sounds will include several artists, an MTV spokesman said details on the performers will be announced in the coming weeks.

The latest announcement came amid plans for a major £1.5 million ( $2.3 million) government refurbishment for the dry dock area in Belfast where the ship was built.

The festival will stage 120 events and has promised the world’s biggest ever digital projection lighting show. A public service will mark the opening of a Titanic Memorial Garden within the grounds of Belfast City Hall.

Belfast's Lord Mayor Niall O Donnghaile is confident the festival will attract visitors from all over the world.

"This is such an exciting time for our city and this festival reflects the incredible interest in Titanic," he said.

A call to all wealthy Irish-Americans. Consider investing in a Titanic II, which would be a more appropriate testament to this brave experiment in marine engineering. Give the Belfast Billie Boys a dig out with their local provincial economy. Launch an appeal today.
