New movie based on 'Quiet Man' shoot to be filmed in Ireland

The cast of "The Quiet Man' with director John Ford

A new movie based on 'The Quiet Man' is to be filmed in Cong, the same village near Connemara where the original took place in 1952.
Former James Bond actor Roger Moore, Aidan Quinn and Geraldine Chaplin will star in the movie called 'Connemara Days,' which will chronicle the arrival of famed Hollywood director John Ford into the little Irish village.

Stacy Keach, star of 'Escape from LA,' will play Ford, who arrived in Cong in 1952 accompanied by John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. The movie, a romantic comedy, will focus on the impact that Ford and his crew had on the local scene.

Electricity had arrived in Cong just weeks before the crew arrived and unemployment was rampant throughout Ireland, but in Cong locals, were paid 30 shillings a week to work on the film - a fortune at the time.

Roger Moore is also executive producer of the movie, which will be directed by Kevin Connor who also directed Marco Polo and Black Beard.

The 'Connemara Days' plot concerns a young local girl, Heather O'Dea, who falls in love with one of Ford's assistant directors.

Roger Moore says he is delighted to be associated with the film.

"The Quiet Man was undoubtedly the best movie John Ford ever directed. It is also one of my all-time favorite films,” he told The Irish Times.

“The opportunity to revisit the time when Hollywood arrived in Ireland to shoot it was simply too delicious an opportunity to miss.”

Director Kevin Connor described the script, which is based on a novel by Steve Mayhew, as “excellent”.

“From the moment I first read the script, I loved it,” Connor said.  “Steve Mayhew has blended a terrific story of the reaction of a rural community to Hollywood’s biggest stars arriving, added to the looming electrification of the region, to produce a touching, funny and endearing screenplay in the mould of the great Ealing comedy classics.”

Will they rebuild the cottage from the quiet man as it is gone now.

Where will they ever find another Barry Fitzgerald? (-; Hopefully Ms. O'Hara will have a part in the movie, if only a cameo appearance.

A very interesting concept. As a Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne fan, and member of an international message board honoring both at http://www.dukewayne.com , I think if it's done with good taste, it may well equal the original. One thing that I think would be a great service to QM fans would be to restore the White O' Morn cottage back to the original state of the first movie for the new one. Possibly it could then be turned into a museum at the conclusion of the filming of the movie. This would be a great monument to both movies and to Ireland in general. Roger Moore, can you hear me?

JTravis ... I read the short story over forty years ago . The setting is early 1920's .

I certainly hope they can pull this one off. The Quiet Man is and always has been one of my very favorite movies. I was 10 years old when this was made but it was a favorite of my Mother and Father's (both of Irish descent) also. I have the DVD and watch it often.

As long as they pay due homage to the original - it'll be fine. You can't remake a masterpiece but this sounds like fun!

My wife and I always debate what year its supposed to be in the movie. There's the line about the IRA and the one about tractors being noisy, smelly things. Someday going to look up the short story the movie is based on.

Just a post script tomy last word. Cong is a small but most delightful place..I went to a session in a wee cottage there a couple of years back had a great time and the scenery whilst not the starkly stunning connemara I expected....none the less fantastic!

Who the hell can play a convincing John Wayne? I fear they may have to exhume his remains...He was "larger then life" so I figure there may be enough of him left to see it through.

That is the greatest photograph. How many Irish families have a family photo like that? My grandfather looked like Barry Fitzgerald. I've been to Cong a few times and it's simply wonderful. I recall, I think it was three years ago, Joe Duffy on RTE "Liveline" did a survey of the most popular Irish movies. "The Quiet Man" came out number one among the Irish voters.

Loved The Quiet Man so I find the making of this movie somewhat intriguing. In fact a dear friend of mine, Maureen Cashman (nee Coyne)had a bit part in the original, most notably saying the rosary at the deathbed scene of her grandfather(John Ford's brother) in the midst of the fight scene. However, I have to admit to usually being disappointed by spin-offs to great films, so I confess to being a tad sceptical. And a girl in 1950s Connemara named Heather? I doubt it. And as much as I loved The Quiet Man, I think Ford's How Green Was My Valley and The Searchers more than gives it a run for the money.

I think it will be a great film to watch, The Quiet Man was such a wonderful movie with such GREAT actors that addiong to the background of the movie will again bring prominance to the origional. Can't wait!

I visited the village of Cong during my last stay in Ireland and I am looking forward to seeing the new film. This area of Connamara has some of the most beautiful scenery in Ireland. Your comment about electrification in 1952 reminded me of my first visit to Ireland in 1951. I stayed in the town of Mallow, County Cork with my grandmothers brother and we only had electricity several hours a day--early morning and after dark.

With all due respect to Sir Roger, I must take issue with his statement, "The Quiet Man was undoubtedly the best movie John Ford ever directed. It is also one of my all-time favorite films,” I would think that the Cavalry trilogy (Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande), The Grapes of Wrath, Mister Roberts and The Searchers might be better choices. The Quiet Man may not be Ford's best film about Ireland, as The Informer captures a Ireland not as idyllic memorably. That being said, it is a travesty that Ford's heartfelt tribute to the Ireland of his dreams is not available on iTunes for it's many fans to enjoy. Does anyone know why? On a recent trip to Ireland, one disappointment was not seeing Maureen O'Hara coming down the meadow with the sunlight making a red halo of her hair. Believe me, I looked hard.

Sounds great to me. Who doesn't love The Quiet Man and anything that goes with that movie??
