Mel Gibson to be awarded freedom of town in County Meath

The town of Trim in Co. Meath has given Mel Gibson a bit of good news to savor, even though his latest turn in front of the camera, Edge of Darkness, has pretty much flopped at the box office ($42 million in takings, at least $80 million to produce . . . ouch!) 

The town will bestow the “Freedom of Trim” on Gibson in April during a hot air balloon fiesta and medieval banquet. 

No word on whether he’ll attend in person, but Trim should hold fond memories for the always controversial Gibson as he filmed his Oscar winning "Braveheart" there in 1995.

 "I have great memories of the time here and all the men and women who worked with me and helped me achieve my vision,” he said at an Irish awards ceremony in 2008
