Shamed Mel Gibson has found himself in the middle of a messy custody battle, sparked by violence and a racist rant, but Robert DeNiro and Whoopi Goldberg have both come forward to offer the Irish Australian star their support.
Gibson, of Lethal Weapon and Mad Max fame, has now been dumped by his agents, William Morris and it looks like his career might be seriously affected by the emergence of a tape of his racist rant last week.
His ex-girlfriend Oskana Grigorieva is said to have recorded him yelling “You look like a f****** bitch in heat and if you get raped by a pack of n******, it will be your fault” as reported the News of the World.
Robert DeNiro in an interview with the Daily Star said that he hoped Gibson gets through his personal problems. He said “I hope he gets through all this. It’s unfortunate for him, you know.”
Whoopi Golberg has also come forward defending Gibson. On her chat show The View on Monday, she said that she does not believe him to be a racist.
She said “I don't like what he did here. But, I know Mel and I know he's not a racist” she said. “You can say he's being a bonehead but I can't sit and say that he's a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I can't say it and so I really just need to say that. I don't like what he's done. Make no mistake.”
She continued “Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because they're drunk. They're out of control. They are not thinking they are idiotic. That's why I don't like alcohol. I can't say anything about that because I know what people are like when they're drunk.”
In 2006 Gibson’s career received its first major blow after his anti-Semitic rant to a cop. That two minute rant was also released on the Internet and it shocked the public.
His ex-girlfriend brought these recent recordings forward as evidence in a custody battle with Gibson over their child. She believed that Gibson might hurt her or her child and claims that he has in the past beaten her so severely that he smashed her teeth. There are even rumors that Gibson threaten his ex-girlfriend with a gun.
Gibson has counteracted claiming that his ex-girlfriend had tried to extort money from him by threatening to leak the recordings. His attorney is presenting a long paper trail of evidence which he believes is proof of extortion to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Catarerina, You say his girlfriend is a gold digger and has no honor or character herself! To come forward and say she is afraid he will hurt the child. Really? The man had 7 kids by his wife and strangely there is not one derogatory remark coming from that camp. Mel made some mistakes and we really need to move on to something that affects... Have you considered that he could be more out of control now than before. From what I read about his older wife whom I believe was a nurse at least before he got famous, she may have been able to control him more and been a good influence on Mel. Whether or not the Russian girl is a gold-digger or not, that's no excuse to hurt a woman and especially the mother of his child. That's screwing up the young child's subconscience. Mel desperately needs to get help.

Please let's pray that this man gets the help HE NEEDS before there is another Hollywood tradgedy. His child needs to be safe and protected and if her mother cannot do that herself, then the authorities need to step in and do it for her. Enough with these outrageous couples spewing hate at each other in front of their kids! It scars them indefinately and then people wonder why theya re screwed up later in life (right Lindsay?).

I think poor Mel has come unglued. What a sad, sad case he turned out to be. He needs professional help because I really think he suffers from mental illness. As for his career, well, when you're agent dumps you and nobody wants to represent you then you're career in show biz is over.

The difference between other people doing this and Mel is that he's a celebrity and his mistakes are going to be broadcast to the world. It comes with the territory. Remember Jonathan Rhys Meyer's problems at the airports? If he'd been Jonathan Nobody, RadarOnline.com wouldn't have cared jack-squat about reporting it. Mel needs alcohol rehab and anger management classes, just like other people who find themselves out-of-control.

BallinaLass is thinking like myself--I find it too teling of a society whereby the rantings of the enraged and sad are more prolific than the fact that he struck a woman, broke her teeth and could have physically damaged his daughter as well--psychologically, he is damaging himself, his ex-wife and his children. Words hurt--they sting awfully bad for sure, but physical abuse is something that should not be tolerated and the idea that some people think that is something to overlook because she is a certain type of woman or deserved it is preposterous.

Well once again the media is on a bashing spree. The guy is an alcoholic and obviously has some issues..but who doesn't? Some more then others. My brother was an alcoholic and he did some of the stupidest things in his life during that time. One of the major problems we have in this society is we do not know how to let up on someone. We ridicule and bash until there is nothing left and then of course should the person die we have a great funeral and suddenly everyone can remember only how great that person was and what a loss..yada yada. No one that lives on earth long enough will not at some points in their lives, screw up. It's called being human an imperfect. For petes sake most people say things privately they would never say publicly. It seems every since this guy made the movie the passion of Christ there has been on thing after another. We have a sinking economy, major environmental problems, youth in crisis, and a long laundry list of things that should have been addressed decades ago. But hey those things can wait, give me another stone to throw at Mel. His girlfriend is a gold digger and has no honor or character herself! To come forward and say she is afraid he will hurt the child. Really? The man had 7 kids by his wife and strangely there is not one derogatory remark coming from that camp. Mel made some mistakes and we really need to move on to something that affects us all. Like greedy corporations, bankers and politicians, now there's a worthy gang for the mob's to chase, lol

Maybe he's a rageaholic. Seems he needs some serious institutional help. Before he physically hurts someone/himself. He's a human being and worth salvaging.

Why do people seem to be more outraged at the fact that Gibson uttered the "n" word, than that he alleged punched a woman (holding a newborn baby) so hard that he knocked out 2 teeth? The misogynist rage that Gibson displays in threatening a woman with sexual assault and death barely registers, while his use of ethnic slurs provokes outrage (as it should). I guess most people don't care about violence against women.

What a person says in private should not affect his acting abilities, etc. Seems like our citizens over react over everything now days. It could be that he said the f__ and the n__ woird in the heat of anger with his former girl friend. I'm not sayng that he is right using such language to anyone but she also had no right to publicly view his remarks; probably did it to gain attention and to get even with him. Hope he sues the pants off of her (figurably, not literally. Think his agents acted childly in dumping him.
