Mark Walhberg’s “Ted” breaks box-office record for R-Rated movie - VIDEO
Highest non-sequel gross for an R-rated comedy
Ted’ smashed box-office records this weekend, opening with the highest-ever gross of any non-sequel R-rated comedy, CBS reports. ‘Ted’, which stars Irish-American actor Mark Wahlberg, earned $54.1 million, outdoing R-rated “Magic Mike,” which still performed better than expected with $39.2 million.
‘Hangover 2’ ($85.9 million) and ‘Sex and the City 2’ ($57 million) respectively hold first and second place for R-rated box-office comedy openings, with ‘Ted’ coming in third. But when ranked as an original R-rated comedy, Ted wins the top spot.
Despite the strong showing, critics didn’t completely approve. Peter Debruge of Variety called the movie a “predictably irreverent satire that's sweeter and, sadly, less funny than you might expect."
Ted hits Ireland August 1, according to RTE.
Ice Age: Continental Drift opened over the weekend in Scotland and Ireland, earning $1.3 million in those markets for the number-one spot, according to Hollywood Reporter. It opens in the US and UK on July 13.
