I realize that life was very brutal, during that time, Smyrnian. I'm not saying that any of the things depicted wouldn't have happened. I see nothing beneficial in re-enacting such gruesomeness, though.

I don't know, Searlit; you may have a point about the violence in Last of the Mohicans but I really think it was actually much worse than that. I have read many contemporary accounts of that period and it was far worse than the movie.

Thanks for the warning Eschetic. I haven't seen Lincoln, yet. I'm a little disappointed that the movie misrepresented Connecticuts votes about slavery. Connecticut was very anti-slavery!I'm going to see it because I like Daniel Day Lewis'acting so much. Although, I never watched 'The Boxer' for obvious reasons. I didn't like 'There will Be Blood'. At least on video you can mute the dang thing.

Day-Lewis was nominated for his roll in "The name of the father" probably his freatest roll.

If Searlit is worried about "gratuitous violence" in LINCOLN, I'd simply avoid the first three to five minutes. While Spielberg starts his film (rather awkwardly) with a flash of brutality in an attempt to get the audience to understand the emotions of the nation after four years of brutal civil war which had left an almost understandable bitterness in half the congress for the states in rebellion which had caused the bloodshed, the bulk of the film is about the brilliant political infighting involved in getting the Constitutional Amendment forever banning slavery through Congress and on to State Ratification before the inevitable fight over formal Reconstruction began. The main shows of "violence" thereafter are emotional moments of Robert Lincoln (the president's oldest son) seeing the horror of a hospital in Washington and his mother (who had already lost two children to disease) desperate to keep him from wartime service which would put him at risk too. The film (as Tony Kushner said, based on about two pages of Doris Kearns Goodwin's magnificent TEAM OF RIVALS - at least two or three other films could and should be made from it) is not the best directed film of the year - the right film won there - but it is one you will remember years after the others have faded from memory, and in no small part because of Daniel Day Lewis' beautifully observed portrayal. I hope you will give it a chance.

He's not the first actor to win three Oscars. He's the first to win three best actor Oscars. Walter Brennan and Jack Nicholson also have three, but each had to settle for at least one best supporting actor Oscar.

Daniel Day-Lewis is the finest actor alive, peerless among his contemporaries.

I don't watch the Oscars...much too long and drawn out...but I was hoping Daniel Day-Lewis would win. How nice to have a wish come true! He is an incredible actor and certainly deserved the honor.

Why didn't they show Daniel Day Lewis receiving his Oscar in the video clip? I'm glad he won! I loved his role in the'Last of the Mohicans,'too. It was only for the gratuitous violence that keeps me from giving the movie a 5* rating. We know war is horribly violent - is the movie a re-enactment, or a story? I wonder what the author would have thought about the over the top violent depictions?

When will they learn that the public just wants an hour long show. A little entertainment and the movie star awards.

And He should have won one for "Last of the Mohicans". A great actor, no question.
